Regina King talks about being a single mom

In her new film This Christmas, Regina King plays the part of a wife trapped in a bad marriage, who remains in the relationship for far too long.  The role was somewhat familiar territory for the 36-year-old actress, who says that she could identify with the character.

The one thing I could relate to was staying in a situation way too long.  The thinking that you’re staying in a situation — for me because of my son — and you’re losing a part of yourself as you’re fooling yourself into thinking that a bad situation is worth something.

Mom to 11-year-old Ian Jr. with ex-husband Ian Alexander Sr., from whom Regina filed for divorce last year, Regina says she turns down all film offers that would take her away from her son for more than one week during the school year.  Ending her marriage of ten years is a decision that Regina says she doesn’t regret.

I think it is definitely difficult for any professional being a mother, and a single one at that. It’s hard not having a partner to raise your child. It’s difficult, but far from impossible and we smile more than we cry.

This Christmas opened Nov. 21.

I saw the movie on Thanksgiving, her portrayal of the character was great and her character had one of the most hilarious parts of the movie.

It’s sad about her marriage, but it seems she (from her above statements) is a very concerned and involved mother to her son.

i definitely thought about her real life situation as i watched what her character went through in the movie. they definitely paralleled each other. i think in a lot of ways the movie rolled probably served as some type of therapy for her.

I loved her role in the movie, especially what she did to hubby in the movie toward the end. That was too good! I love her dedication to being there to raise/love her son, turning down anything that’d take her away far too long than she’d like. :)

I loved her in the movie as well. She has a great presence on screen. When she is in a scene, she kind of commands your attention, and not purposely. She’s a great actress. And I too loved the scene at the end with her and her husband. Hilarious! Oh, and is her body not FABULOUS? She made me want to hit the gym.

I hadn’t really heard the situation regarding her and her husband but she seems very strong and seems to have recovered and moved along nicely. Her priorities definitely seem to be in the right place. I agree with her that sometimes it’s hard to pull yourself out of a bad situation. Sometimes it takes a while for you to see the full picture and put everything into perspective so that you can make an intelligent decision about what’s best for all involved. But I’m happy that she has no regrets. I’m sure that she will continue to have success in what she does from here on, future relationships included.
