Cynthia Nixon teaches her children to give back

Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, 41, talked to People about how she gives back to her community and how she teaches her children to do the same. She has daughter Samantha, 11, and son Charles Ezekiel, 5 next month, with ex-partner Danny Mozes and says that they are "not too young to learn about giving back." She also tries to instill religiousness in them,

My children are being raised Jewish, so last year we all had a meeting with a rabbi, who said it’s good to let your children know what their parents values are.

Cynthia’s partner Christine Marinoni works for the Alliance of Quality Education and Cynthia is pro-public school.

I’m a very big public school advocate. I try to bring public awareness to increase funding. My kids go to public school. I grew up here [in New York], went to public school, got a great education. It wasn’t a tough decision.

When it comes to future decisions for the children, Samantha is "a very good writer" and Charles is "very into building and dinosaurs, that kind of thing".

The children visit Cynthia on the set of her movie Sex and the City: The Movie and she tries to set up a playdate between Charles and Sarah Jessica Parker‘s son James Wilkie, 5, but it hasn’t worked out so far.

If we’re shooting late on a Friday night, they’ll come by the set. They [Charlie and James] seem to be on set different days. But we talk to Charlie about James and James about Charlie, and one day we’ll figure it out so they can be there at the same time.

Is she gay? I thought her son was only 3 or 4 at the oldest.. I can’t believe he is 5, time really flies!!

How can you say you’re *raising the children Jewish* when you’re working on Friday night and the children have zero sense of the Sabbath’s holiness? Work is forbidden on the Sabbath. There are no half ways about it. Either you’re Jewish or you’re culturally affiliated like someone who likes Chinese food, for example. But there’s a huge stretch between that and living a Jewish life.

JJ, Cynthia might be a Reformed Jew who like many reformed Jews work on the Sabbath and may or may not keep Kosher. In Judaism, like many other religions there are degrees of practice. I am a reformed Jew who when I have to works on the Sabbath, that does not make me any less of a Jew.

How can she raise her children jewish. She is not jewish and neither is her partner. That is just weird to me.

Cynthia Nixon is not Jewish. The guy she had kids with, Danny Mozes, is Jewish. That’s why she is raising the kids Jewish.

How about not judging her? Everyone has different religious views and that’s okay.

If she never converted – the kids aren’t Jewish. Period. Kids can only be considered Jewish with a Jewish mother – converted or Jew from birth. I think Cynthia really needs to brush up on Judaism 101 before she tells the world how she’s *raising* her kids.

And it isn’t judging; it’s being offended because someone believes they can decide that they like your religion and “try it on” like they would a pretty sweater at a department store. She is being completely disrespectful!
