Code Orange: Making Frequent Toy Recalls a Thing of the Past

Logo_gatherIsit just me or are there more product recalls than there used to be?  Oram I just noticing them more because my family might be personallyaffected?

As part of a campaign sponsored by Children’s Motrin (they are alsorunning ads throughout CBB), I was asked to contribute a few posts  onthe topic of children’s health at Gather.com.  My second post is up now, titled, "Making Frequent Toy Recalls a Thing of the Past." Please check it out and post a comment.  You can also check out my first post, "When Your Kid is Sick."

In the past we did not rely on SO many imports from China, where the toys are very often tainted with lead, as we’ve seen. It seems we’re just out for the cheapest thing. So let’s outsource, that’s a great idea.

I was frustrated in Target yesterday to pick up an oversized Hershey’s Kiss (neat stocking stuffer, I thought) and saw on the back “Made in Mexico for Hershey’s Mexico.” What?? Hershey is in good ol’ PA! But then I learned the company has lost a lot of local support by outsourcing to Mexico.

I like the Melissa and Doug suggestion. And as far as I know, Playmobil is still made in Germany? I wish the manufacturers we’re exposed to the most would stress safety and quality over cheapness. It’s infuriating.
