Vanessa Williams tells moms to give up their guilt

With a cross-country commute each week, Vanessa Williams knows that something has to give.  But the mom to four — including Melanie, 20, Jillian, 18, Devin, 14, and Sasha, 7 — told ModernMom.com recently that she doesn’t sweat the small stuff, and neither should you.

The secret is…there is no balancing. You have to surrender to not be everywhere at all times. Everyone and everything suffers at times but the guilt that a mother imposes on herself is the worst of all. Do the best you can and know it’s good enough.

When she’s not filming her hit television show Ugly Betty in Los Angeles, Vanessa can be found in her home state of New York, where she currently resides.  The 44-year-old — who was the first African-American to be crowned Miss America — counts "bearing four beautiful, healthy children" as among her proudest achievements.  Her own parents taught her to foster independence in her kids, as well as to "realize there are always consequences to every action and always forgive with love." Vanessa adds,

Along with the lessons that my parents taught me, my children respect life, the environment and treat people with kindness.

Now that is a gorgeous family. I know that most working mother’s, especially those that travel, fear that the time away will affect their children negatively. I think the key is giving your children a stable environment. Whether your children travel with you like the Pitts or you leave them with a trusted guardian, I think the key is structure. Anyway, she seems to have done ‘good enough’. All of her children, even her son, seem to have a very pleasant disposition. From the interviews that I’ve read about them over the years and the pictures that I’ve seen here and there, they appear to be great, well-rounded individuals.
