Elisabeth Hasselbeck's pregnancy journal for Dreft: Entry 2

The View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, 30,is due with her second child on November 11th and in the lead up to the birth, she has begun writing an online journal for Dreft. Elisabeth and husband, Tim Hasselbeck, 29, already have daughter, Grace Elisabeth, 2 1/2, and do not know the sex of this next child.

Honestly, my main concern has been Grace’s transition. Expertsalways indicate that keeping things fairly consistent for the oldersibling before the second is best.Well — so much for that notion! I keep looking at my little girlthinking — new state, new home, new bedroom, new environment, and a newbrother or sister!!! We’re trying to adjust to that, just in time forus to head back to NYC!!!

I am glad that I did certain things ahead of time: Having her exactsheets and comforter here when we arrived, so that the room here feltlike home. I shipped many of her favorites here, stuffed animals,books, toys, her bath towel, cups and plates, sidewalk chalk. I stockedthe kitchen with her ‘go-to’ snacks. We got her a new toothbrush — whichshe loves! We decorated her room today with supplies from the artstore… bought a wooden ‘G’ and had her color, sticker, and glitter glueit, added a ribbon and then hung it on her doorknob.

I let Grace try on a sling with her baby-doll in it and walk aroundthe house. We played ‘Memory,’ and pretended she was the mommy. Her eyeswere wide when she realized that she could have the baby on her, and doeverything normally. I desperately want her to know that when I amholding the baby I am still ‘hers’ too. I would recommend that to anymoms expecting their second!

Um, her doctor told her to drink? Excellent. I suppose this doctor hasn’t ever heard of FASD. What an irresponsible recommendation.

Danielle’s note: Some doctors have been known to tell pregnant mothers that they are allowed one alcoholic beverage, once in a while, towards the end of the pregnancy to relax (not in the first two trimesters). I know when I was pregnant with my daughter, my doctor told me when it was he felt it was safe to have an occasional glass of wine. Last time we posted an article like this, we had some interesting responses from French mamas, many of whom do drink wine throughout given the culture.

I think she is having a boy this time around, she looks different than when she was pregnant with grace. Maybe this week, we will hear an announcement.

I am also in my 3rd trimester and having contractions quite often. My doctor told me to also have a glass of red wine once a week to calm them- especially running around. Isn’t her due date like, any day now? hopefully we’ll hear something soon!

Any good pregnancy book will tell you that you can have a glass of red wine a few times while you are pregnant, more so when you are trying not to dilate. FAS only happens when you drink heavily throughout your pregnancy. Before you trash on a mom for following doctors advice you should read up on what you can and cannot do while preggo…a great book (no sarcasm intended) is Pregnancy for Dummies.
At any rate, I’m excited to see the post that says she’s a mom again lol. She’s adorable

I love Elisabeth! I just have to share because my sister-in-law has some similar things going on in her life right now. Her first child is also a girl just like Elisabeth, and she was due with her second child on 11/12 which is one day after Elisabeth’s due date (she actually ended up having her baby on 11/1 though). She had another girl so maybe Elisabeth will too!

I don’t mean to be disrespectful – but at the mention of a doctor recommending A glass of wine on a long flight at 38 weeks, someone mentions FASD? I respect that we all have different opinions about certain personal matters. And I don’t pretend to know what is right or wrong here. Not to mention, that isn’t the purpose of this site. But throwing out FASD at this story…..wow.

Her dr. recommended a glass of wine- not a bottle of wine. It is very common now for dr’s to suggest it as did mine in my last trimester to help with easing the pain of being in that last little stretch.

I certainly didn’t mean to imply that one glass of wine meant her baby was going to be born with full spectrum FASD, only that a doctor’s recommendation to drink alcohol while pregnant was irresponsible.

The permissive attitude towards drinking while pregnant alarms me. I’m not sure why people don’t take this issue seriously enough. Perhaps it’s because their own doctors are not concerned on their behalf.

“No level of drinking alcohol has been proven safe during pregnancy. The full pattern of FAS usually occurs in offspring of women who are alcoholics or chronic alcohol abusers. These women either drink heavily (about four or five or more drinks daily) throughout pregnancy or have repeated episodes of binge drinking. However, FAS can occur in women who drink less. ARBD and ARND can occur in babies of women who drink moderately or lightly during pregnancy.”

Even if it is one glass of wine in the third trimester, why would anyone take a chance with the health and safety of their unborn child? Alcohol-related neurological damage
is irreversible.

There is no excuse to be underinformed about
the effects of alcohol during pregnancy.
