Chef Anthony Bourdain talks about his family

11/02/2007 at 07:50 AM ET

Chef and author Anthony Bourdain, 51, talked about his work, traveling and family life to The Record newspaper. He is married to Italian Ottavia Busia and they have daughter Ariane, 6 months. The decision to have a child surprised his mother Gladys as Tony had promised never to have children, because,

…He didn’t want to be a hostage to fear. And yet he’s so much more confident and so happy in his life and his marriage that he decided he wanted a baby.

He loves spending time with his wife and daughter, but hopes that Ariane won’t take after her father.

I loved it because it was a refuge for misfits. I don’t want my daughter associated with that element. I would prefer if she stayed out of the restaurant business, but there would be some small part of me that would be pleased to see her do that.

But he will keep a keen eye on what she’s eating.

I will be working mightily to make sure this is not a child who will only eat grilled cheese sandwiches with the crusts cut off. As soon as she’s on solid food, she’ll be on a first-name basis with every sushi chef in New York. If she’s healthy and happy and strong-willed, that’s really all I could hope for.

WOW! Thank you for posting this. I love him and how becoming a dad has changed him for the better. He also has quit smoking after 36 years because of his daughter. I guess he got over his fear 🙂 I guess good things come to those who wait.

He quit smoking???? OMG I really never thought he’d do that – even for his daughter! Good for him! I love Tony and am so happy for him. He sounds like a wonderful father. Some people are just not mature enough to have kids earlier in life. Sounds like it happened at just the right time for him.

I was a pack and a half a day smoker and quit smoking in one 30-minute treatment with laser therapy. I went to a company called Freedom Laser Therapy that provides a pain free low-level laser procedure which helps alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms. The staff at Freedom Laser Therapy is dedicated and passionate about helping smokers end their nicotine addiction.

I would really recommend laser therapy to help you quit smoking. Go to their locations page to find a Freedom Laser Therapy clinic or a local quit smoking laser therapy practitioner in your area.

Loved Anthony Bourdain’s Hawaii segments. The only part that didn’t really seem authentic was the Maui segment. Willy K. singing at the haole
chef’s multi-million dollar home was stretching it. Molokai mo’ bettah, as was the Nainoa Thompson clip. He has all the best of his parents in him. Panache!
Aloha and Mahalo plenty!
