I’ve heard 3 different ways. If a woman gains weight all over -girl; small round pouch-boy. I carried both ways and had a boy both times. I did gain almost the exact same weight both times even though I carried them differently, 24 and 26 lbs, very low with the first and very high with the second.

Another thing I heard is if you have hot (passionate) sex -girl; cold (ho hum) sex -boy.

Third way, if you thread a needle and let it hang over the mother’s wrist it will tell you the sex of all your children now and in the future by swinging in a line or a circle. The needle stops momentarily between each child then starts swinging again to tell the next child’s sex. I can’t remember which way the needle moves for which sex. Mine said I would have girl; boy; boy; girl with super short gap between swing times between the two boys (like close enough to be twins) and a long long gap between the last boy and girl like the girl would come years later. I only had two boys and they were born 16 months apart so that could work for the closeness in needle swings but no girls before or after the boys. But to be fair about the results – I had a tubal ligation after my second boy so there was never any chance to find out what any future children would have been. My boys are almost out of their teens now so I think if the tubal was going to fail it would have done so by now.

My mom found this topic great when I showed her. Shes been saying for decades that that I, her first, was an awful pregnancy (major MAJOR morning sickness).. but she gained only 10kilos (no clue what it is in lbs…) to her 48kilo body.. she said i was born 3kilos… small mom, hard pregnancy BUT easy on the weight gain and medium birth weight for a girl.

with my younger brother, she said the pregnancy was perfect, NO complaints and I believe she gave birth a few weeks early (he was 4kilo).. and again only 10kilo to her NORMAL, pre-1st-pregnancy weight…

so WHO knows really. she said they did nothing different at any time..

these are great to read though… old wives tales are prevalent in ALL cultures and societies and thats clearly represented on this board.

One final note… to the blogger who told the tale of a friend who wanted to abort her ‘male’ fetus and now favors the twin girl, thats majorly disturbing. I grew up with 2 sets of (natural!) triplets and their mom told us when we were back from college our first semester, that BOTH times the doctors asked her to “reduce” and both times she and her husband refused. i cannot IMAGINE my life without my friends (they had 3 identical boys the first time around, and 2 years later identical girls, and a boy!)… I understand that sometimes there is medical reason to reduce high risk pregnancies, but reduction should only be done when its ABSOLUTELY necessary… that doctor made the right decision.

I think its a shame to plan a gender when so many couples try for many years and can’t conceive. Its truely a vanity to just be able to conceive at all.

Depending on the month you conceived – if it was even or odd – you can determine what you’re having. Mine wasn’t quite right!

I have heard if a woman is on top during lovemaking, it will be a boy. If the man is on top, it will be girl.

I remember someone saying if you get lots of pimples and have that reddish tint to your face that you are having a girl “the babygirl is taking your beauty”

I have heard that when you conceive predicts male v. female gender. It has to do with the boy sperm dying off quickly while the girl sperm survive a lot longer. Basically if you time conception right before ovulation you will have a boy and after it will be a girl (or something like that) I hope that makes sense! : )

Well I was told that if you have TERRIBLE morning sickness, it will be a girl. Well, I was sick my whole pregnancy, and sure enough, it was a girl!
