Baby K'tan: A Different Kind of Baby Carrier

10/12/2007 at 02:15 AM ET

Yhst30857447277715_1970_2003213 When I heard about the Baby K’tan, I was intrigued. It wasn’t a wrap, ,it wasn’t a soft carrier, and also it wasn’t a pouch or ring sling. Baby K’tan’s website calls it, “a cross between a sling and a more structured front baby carrier, providing the positions and benefits of both, with added security as compared to the traditional sling, and added comfort and as easy to use as compared to the traditional front carrier.” I was so excited that there are 8 ways you can carry your baby!  It will take your baby from infant, up to 40 lbs (around 3+ years).

My two year old son Ben is almost 23 pounds now. I hadn’t used a sling or pouch since he started walking last November. The other day, I asked him to try it and his eyes lit up.  I decided to try the Two Hip Carry first, especially because I’m almost 7 months pregnant and have a toddler, albeit a light one.

The Baby K’tan looks like two pouches in a cotton fabric with a circle of fabric holding it together. There is also a sash (Baby K’tan calls it the adjustable back support band, made of the same material, that really gave support to the Baby K’tan. To do the Two Hip Carry: put the Baby K’tan over your head, then put an arm through each piece of material. Put the child in, facing you and loop their legs over the bottom edge of the fabric. Then take the sash and loop it around your child to tie on your back.

Designer/Owner Michel Chesal, a mother of 3, was so helpful and helped me to choose my size. The Baby K’tan was invented by Michel and her husband, along with another couple, the Wernicks. She recommended a smaller size and even in my almost 7 months pregnant state and carrying my two year old, it fit lovingly.

Sarah_gilbert_mr_fp_159459 Sara Gilbert, seen here wearing the Baby K’tan in heather grey to carry 9 week old daughter Sawyer, is a fan and just called the company to order more.

The Baby K’tan (which retails between $58 and $62) is versatile, functional, and a great way to carry your babe in comfort. A cute little hat is included!! You can also personalize your Baby K’tan for $9.99. Click here to see the colors (8 available now, the pink hexagon will be available soon).

I find it hilarious that these items are being sold for $58 and $62 when mothers in Africa have been carrying their children in this fashion for yeeeeeeeeeeears. This is not a new invention, let alone original; give credit where credit is due.

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
