Halle Berry on negative pregnancy tests and her 'Maury moment'

Actress Halle Berry, 41, appears on Oprah today to promote her new movie Things We Lost In The Fire — but of course, the talk turned into a baby chat. Halle is expecting her first child with model Gabriel Aubry this winter — they have decided not to find out the sex.

On deciding to become a mother:

I had resigned myself to, ‘I’m going to be single until I’m 50, at least, and I’ll have a child on my own.’ I was really okay with that. [Then I met Gabriel.]

On trying to get pregnant:

We had been trying to have a baby for quite some time. I’m sort of superstitious, so I saved all of the negative tests in a drawer. Don’t ask! I don’t know why, but I did. After about 35 tests, we finally got a positive test.

While I was trying to get pregnant, we tried really hard, so it was a lot of staying home and just doing what you do. I was watching a lot of television and — don’t judge me for this‘Maury Povich’. It was about, ‘You are the father. You’re not the father.’ So what the women do when they find out he’s not the daddy, they run off the stage, right? They run to the back. I don’t know why, but they run to the back.

So when we got the positive test — Gabriel was downstairs in the den — I ran upstairs! I got up there, and I thought, ‘I’ve been watching too much Maury!

Why they decided to leave the sex a delivery surprise:

We’re going to wait because we have a whole life[time] to know what it is. There’s so few genuine surprises in life anymore — why not have a huge surprise? I like fantasizing [that] one day it’s a girl, one day it’s a boy.

On having realistic expectations of her baby post-delivery:

When you’re pregnant, you have this idealized view of what the baby looks like. You don’t like to visualize is the post-birth reality, with its head smashed, purple, one ear folded down, eyes swollen.

On having more than one child:

Well, there’s just one right now. But we’re hoping right after this one to do it again.

she will make such a loving mum and gabriel a great father, its sad she couldnt get pregnant earlier as you can tell she really wanted one, maybe it was divine intervention, i hope they have MANY MANY kids

Halle is going to make a great mom, and im sure this child will be beautiful!! This is going to be a fun pregnancy to watch.

I saw most of the interview except for the very beginning. Did she mention to Oprah when she’s due? I’ve read conflicting stories elsewhere (i.e. Spring vs. Winter)

Sarah’s note: We’ve heard Feb/March, but nothing specific.

- Rachel on

I know that this is Halle’s first biological child but does she still keep in contact with her adopted child, Eric Benet’s daughter?

- Heather on

Heather, Hallee did not adopt Ebony.

If I remember correctly, Eric said that Hallee and Ebony were no longer in contact. He said something else about her missing the two being together. I believe I read that in Ebony magazine.

I do not think she is still talking to India.. I meant Eric was trying to use his daughter to get more money from their divorce settlement.

- Shantale on

Whoops- That’s suppose to say India lol. Not sure why I called her Ebony.

Congrats to halle, she looked beautiful and so happy. I have a feeling within a year she will be pregnant again, but if not at least she is getting to have one. Bet her baby will be beautiful.

she is suppose to be due in early april or late march I am pretty sure she is due about 2 weeks after me from what i have heard.

- Abbie K. on

Ms. Berry needs to slow it down a bit and focus on delivering baby#1 safely before planning baby#2. You always want to think positively but she’s still pretty early in her pregnancy. So she needs to just take it easy.

- Meela on

Meela! I thought she was thinking positive! Thinking of having another baby is a positive thing! If she would sit and stress about an “if” she could get pregnant again, then what use would that be to her and the baby , or to her future as a mom! I think she is taking it well! And enjoying herself!

I gave my husband the same talk. Newborns are mashed. Don’t get the idea that this baby will be instantly cute. Then when our son was born, he was like a porceline doll. “Perfect”, as one might say. It was almost bizarre.

Halle has always been beutiful, but she was glowing on oprah. She seems so happy with her life, and looked super cute. Can’t wait to see her baby

- Mary on
