Ethan Hawke's advice to his kids

Actor Ethan Hawke’s, 36, main advice to his kids, daughter Maya Ray, 9, and son Levon Roan, 5 1/2, with ex-wife Uma Thurman is very simple.

I tell them the more youread, the more intelligent you are. It’s really that simple.

Ethan just finished directing a new film, The Hottest State, based on his novel and while some may call the film a little narcissistic, that doesn’t bother the star at all.  He has come to the conclusion that he will let his children decide on the type of person he is.  He said,

When I cometo be dead, there will be a lot of work by me that people can look at. My kidscan decide whether I was a narcissist or whether I was a loving person.

There is a big difference between education and intelligence. Simple reading will not make you more intelligent. Saying that reading equals being/getting intelligent is not only incorrect but a slap in the face for all of those who are not fortunate enough to learn how to read/write. Give them an IQ test that doesn’t require those skills and they still end up as intelligent as educated western folks.

The more knowledge you will have but thats quite different than intelligence. Maybe he has yet to read a book on intelligence?

Seems Ethan isn’t that much of a reader, then…

I swear on this website everyone is always so quick to criticise! In my opinion anyone encouraging reading should be applauded. If more of us read ourselves and read to our children we would not only have better vocabularies (which would sometimes not hurt on this website) but would hopefully be a more informed and educated world.
