Faith Hill worried about kids after CMA incident

In 2006 at the CMA awards, county singer Faith Hill was fooling around with the camera yelling "What?!" following fellow artist Carrie Underwood’s win, but little did she know that joke would not come across as such.

After learning how others were viewing it, the 39-year-old mother sat her daughters, Gracie Katherine, 10, Maggie Elizabeth, 9, and Audrey Caroline, 5 1/2, down following school the next day. She said,

I’m sure you’ve been teased or your mom’s been talked about at school today. And they go, ‘Yeah, there’s a lot of talk about you at school today, Mom.’ I said, ‘I just want you to know that I was only joking and it was never meant in a mean way and the joke was on me. I was making fun of myself.’

And all three of them were like, ‘Mom, come on, we know that, everybody knows that.’ I was so thankful because I thought they were gonna get so much grief at school from my big — I don’t want to say mistake — but my episode. They were gonna get the brunt of it, and that would have hurt worse than the hell that I went through, is for my kids to have gone through any kind of hell. They don’t deserve it. But they were fine and they handled it in a great way.

The girls’ father is country singer and actor Tim McGraw, 40.

I’m sorry, but I’ve seen that clip a bunch of times and the reaction was a bit too immediate to have been staged. She’s not that good of an actress. But I’m glad her children didn’t feel any real adverse effects because of the incident.

Although I dont believe Faith! About the Carrie Underwood thing! I still think she is a good mom! And im glad to see her daughters didn’t have to encounter anything negative!

- Callen on

I agree her girls don’t deserve any grief but only she knows the truth of whether she was really kidding or not. I’m not so sure…but that’s just my guess.

- madison on

I dont belive she was jokeing but what what else are you to say after the everyone sees it. But I am glad it hasn’t effected her children in anyway. She is a great mom!

- brandy on

I can’t believe people still think she was serious! She’s gone to these award shows for years…she knew she was on camera!!??
Anyhoo, She seems like a GREAT mom and has her kids well being above all else! Kudo’s to her and her sense of humor…

That incident and a few others have really rubbed me the wrong way, lately (whether or not she was joking, she still made it about her and that is sort an insult). I used to be a fan of Faith’s but it almost seems like once she and Tim went “Hollywood” they (or at least she) got a little too big for their britchest.

- Sarah on

I really wish she would go ahead and own up to her “mistake.” I have no doubts that she is a wonderful mother, but rather than telling her children it was a “joke” she could have used it as a teaching moment… she didn’t. But I too am glad her children didn’t suffer for her poor lapse in judgement.

I still can’t believe how much this whole thing got blown out of proportion! I agree with momof2girlies. Also, in 2003, she did the same exact thing when Tim won an award they were both up for. I think it’s obvious she was joking and I saw an interview with Carrie where she believed the same thing.

- Erika on

I don’t know weather she was joking or not tho it seems most likely she wasn’t. However I don’t hold it against er and I especially don’t hold it against her kids. Also That was a while ago peple should build a bridge and get over it. She apologized to Carrie for it and Carrie accepted that’s al that really matters.

- snoopy89 on

Joking or not it was extremely rude and selfish. She took the spotlight away from Carrie and end the end her “joke” just made her look foolish and selfish.

There is no reason the girls should get any grief for their moms classless act, but hopffully she teaches them not to be sore losers like herself.

- morgan on

I can’t believe how many people there are who can’t tell the difference between a joke and something serious. Get a sense of humor people. She was obviously kidding.

- Kate on

I don’t believe it either. I did believe that they were good parents and for that I respected them. After Tim’s comments last spring about Canada and Canadians I tossed out all their CDs. I’ve never heard anyone make comments like that and I hope to God I never will again. I was brought up to respect both cultures and was attempting to do the same with my kids. I can’t anymore. Every time we meet an American tourist I don’t know whether I’m meeting a “friend” or someone who is laughing in my face. It’s a sad world sometimes.

- colleen on

Every time I’ve seen that clip I could swear at the very end right before she walked off she was smiling so I’ve always thought she was joking. I just can’t imagine someone being that shocked about not winning an award. And I hope she wouldn’t lie to her kids about it.

- legemc on

What did Tim say about Canada? I hadn’t heard about that so I did a google search and couldn’t find anything.

- legemc on

Ok Faith – fess up and admit you were a sore loser. I love you anyway!

- tracieleigh on

Just gonna throw this out there…

I believe that Faith was joking. BUT…I found it to be a rather lame joke. When someone wins an award, the spotlight should be on her (in this case, Carrie). I don’t think FH is a bad person, but being “funny” during what should’ve been Carrie’s moment was a bit attention-hogging. JMHO.

Reminds me of the time Denzel Washington won an Oscar and Julia Roberts (presenting) went all loopy on him. It was all about her, not him (the award honoree)!

- puamelia on

What did Tim say about Canada?

- Jen on

I don’t know how many of you actually *saw* the CMA awards and this “joke” in question, but the whole time Faith was doing this, she was smiling. It’s quite obvious it was just a joke, albeit a silly one.

Faith is a classy lady and she was just having fun. I’m sure there are more important things we can worry about than whether or not Faith was a sore loser.

- Rebecca on

Oh please! She was not joking. It doesn’t matter if she’s a good mother, a person with class and dignity would not have done that. Good example to set for your kids!

- Becs on

From the moment I saw Faith make that face, I knew it was all a joke. Come on! Have a sense of humor, people! It just seemed so obvious. I am sarcastic myself so maybe that’s why it’s so obvious to me; I can just see myself making that kind of well-intentioned but ill-received joke.

- daphneesmith on

A really lame joke if you ask me, I only saw her smiling before, thinking she was going to win the award…maybe it was a joke, and maybe it wasn’t but either way it came off really bad. and thats too bad because I like her…I just saw another youtube (while i was lookin up the CMA incident again) and she started yelling at a woman because she grabbed at Tims quote un quote “balls”, I doubt the woman meant too, but she did and Faith got realllly mad!!
I too actually googled what Tim had said about Canadians! But couldn’t find anything so hopefully Colleen can fill us in!

- Loo on

Thank goodness the CHILDREN took it well. In the end that’s all that really matters. This incident did have me questioning FH. Just questioning mind you. I really hope it was just an ill-received joke. If a woman put her hands on my husband’s privates, I’d have decked her,(altho he would have probably lost it on her too, albeit verbally) and I consider myself a lady at 41,(not sure if anyone else does, hehe, just kidding). I can’t find the Canadian comment either… got a feeling I AIN’T gonna like it tho.

- Campbell on

If indeed this was a joke, she pulled it off very poorly. I to only saw her smiling before they announced the winner. I watched it in slow motion on the internet, watched her face turn suddenly, mouth “WHAT!”, then turn away. As she walked away it appeared to me that she mouthed “Oh Sh*t”. Maybe I’m the only one who saw that, and maybe I was mistaken. But either way it was a bad attention-grabbing joke.

- S on

I don’t know about the Canadian comment, but I lost a lot of respect for Tim when he accused that poor girl of stealing his ring (and of course she didn’t!) I simply can’t imagine how humiliating and embarrassing that situation must have been for that poor girl, especially when she didn’t even know what was going on… he should be ashamed of himself! I wonder what HE told his children about that one?!

I still don’t buy that Faith was joking though. But if she was it was in very poor taste and she should still be willing to learn from her MISTAKES!
