Simon Pegg named Apple Martin's godfather

It has been revealed that Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow have chosen Simon Pegg to be their three-year-old daughter Apple’s godfather. The English actor plans to encourage little Apple to have fun.  The 37-year-old said,

I’d like to think I’m a really great, fun godfather. It’s much more interesting than trying to be a good influence on her. I’m a comedian – it’s what they expect.

Chris and Gwyneth also have a son, Moses, 17 months.

I AM SURPRISED SHE IS ONLY GETTING BAPTIZED NOW. MOST KIDS HAVE THERE BAPTISM WHEN THEY ARE BABIES. AT 3 GOING ON 4 IS KINDS OLD FOR A CHILD.

I thought this was public knowledge! He seems like a fun godfather.

Easy on the shift key there, BELA. I was baptised when I was seventeen and my mum when she was 40-something. Each to their own.

I can’t imagine she is getting baptized at all. I assumed she followed Judaism more than anything else. I am sure it is just a title they would like to bestow upon someone special for their child.

This has been known for a few years. Actually, I think Apple has two godfathers, I seem to recall reading somewhere that both Simon Pegg and Jonny Buckland (from Coldplay) are her godfathers.

I have heard rumors that Chris and Gwyneth are on the rocks… anybody else heard the same?

Sarah’s note: It’s all tabloid gossip that started in the British rags. I saw paparazzi pics of them out yesterday and I believe Gwyneth has refuted it.

What a lucky kid – Simon Pegg is such a funny and talented guy. Shawn of the Dead is such a brilliant funny movie – I’m sure he’ll be a great Godfather.

I’m assuming they don’t mean godfather in the religious sense, right? Isn’t Gwyneth Jewish? And wouldn’t that make her kids Jewish as well since it’s passed down through the mother (I think)? I could be completely wrong on this, but I always thought godparents were more of a Christian thing? Maybe someone knows for sure?

I suppose they mean it in more of an honorary way, which I think is really nice. Does Moses have a godfather too?

I’m Jewish and my son has godparents. They are the people who hold your son during the bris ceremony (not during the actual circumcision part though, obviously). For a Jewish girl, you would do a “baby naming” (when you announce the child’s Hebrew name) instead of a bris, which is similar to a baptism – and that’s where you would name the godparents. You can do a baby naming anytime, but a bris happens 8 days after the birth.

Gwyneth was raised Jewish and has mentioned being a Jewish woman before in interviews, so I’m sure they aren’t planning a baptism, unless Chris Martin’s family is very religious and Christian – which is unlikely, as most English families are not churchgoers (I think the statistic is over 85% do not attend any church).

Anyway, thought I’d throw in some info on Jewish godparents!
