Kerryn McCann welcomes son six weeks early

Kerryn McCann, an Australian runner, gave birth to her third child with husband Greg on Wednesday, September 5.  Cooper Patrick weighed 5 pounds, 3 ounces.

The 40-year old underwent an induction six weeks before her due date after she learned that she had breast cancer. She will begin chemotherapy on Monday.

Little Cooper is currently reported as being in the neo-natal intensive care unit.

The three-time Olympian is also mother to son Brenton, who will turn 10 on September 15, and daughter Josie, 3.

I don’t mean to say “weakened condition” here – because I know women’s bodies cope really well with birth – but will her body cope with chemo so quickly after giving birth?

I really really pray for the best for the entire family. Could you imagine having to deal with Chemo RIGHT after delivering your child 6 weeks early? Her husband is going to have a very busy few months ahead of him with a preemie, a sick wife, and older children :( lots of luck to them all!

Congrats to her and her family. I hope that Kerryn and her son continue to do well.

A Neo-Natal unit is where babies born with special needs are treated. Infants treated there would be such cases as multiple births, jaundice, and as in little Cooper’s case, preemies as well as infants with breathing difficulties. The nurses and the doctors there are trained to deal with babies who need that little bit of extra TLC. They are fabulous people that deserve a great big standing ovation (I’m the mom of a 2 1/2 year old who was born 6 weeks early and these people were the absolute best!!)

Her cancer sounds pretty serious(I know all cancer’s are serious but…)if they took the baby so early, and want to start chemo so soon.
I hope all will be okay for her and the baby.
Very sad.

Andi- The Neo-natal intensive care unit (commonly called the NICU for short) is where premature babies are taken instead of to the regular nusery. In the NICU, preemies can recieve the extra care they need in their first few weeks or months of life. Perhaps somebody else can explain it better.

Just remember though that most doctors and midwives say that 37 weeks is considered full term, so if baby Cooper was born 6 weeks early, in reality it’s more like 3 weeks early so his odds go up considerably in his little favor. Hopefully, for their sakes, the NICU is just a precaution at this point.

Positive thoughts going out to the whole family during this difficult time.

The baby is a pretty good size for being 6 weeks early! I wish them the best and will keep them in my thoughts and prayers. Having a baby in NICU is hard as it is then on top of it the cancer that’s alot to handle. My last baby was in NICU and I remember how ruff it was.
