Reviews Roundup: Sunscreen for Babies/Kids and Mommies
As a fair skinned gal, with a history of skin cancer on both sides of my family, I wear sunscreen. All year round. My equally fair son also wears it everyday when we leave the house. I wanted to test out some brands for him and I for this roundup. Usually I just slather on what my child is wearing, but I don’t think that’s the best thing for my skin.
I came across a wonderful brand called KINeSYS . We tested their Kids SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray with Parasol 1789 ($15), Kids SPF 30+ Sunscreen Cream with Titanium Dioxide, and the SPF 30+ Sun Protection Stick. The spray was my favorite because the spray (a pump) provided good coverage on Ben’s little limbs. To get it on his face, I sprayed my hands first and then applied it. It was a little slippery, but it covered him so easily. The spray is oil free, alcohol free and PABA free. It is also water resistant and sweat resistant. He and I liked the scent and the SPF 30+ always protected his fair skinned. This was one of our favorites!! I found myself reaching for it too and using it just as much as Ben did. The stick was good for getting his nose or lips and the lotion provided generous coverage too (but we just adored the spray!). The bright orange color meant I could always find it in my diaper bag. Arbonne, according to one of my colleagues, is a well-kept secret in suburbia, and their baby sunscreen was supposed to be excellent. Lisajoy Sachs, a district manager in Baltimore, was kind enough to send us a some samples for baby and mommy to try.
For the Babes: Their Arbonne Baby Care line has a great sunscreen ($19.50 for 6 oz). Even though if it was in lotion form (I do love the sprays) it worked well with my toddler’s sensitive skin and went on creamily (not too goopy!). It’s water resistant, PABA free, and has broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Contains Vitamins A, C, and E and gentle botanicals, as well as 10% zinc oxide. We also LOVED the way it smelled.
Arbonne also has many sun protection items for the mommies! I tried the Arbonne Save Face & Body Sunscreen ($26) in a SPF 15. For everyday protection,I applied it under my makeup, I loved the smell of the botanicals and my face was protected by the Parasol 1789. For those days at the beach, I tried Damage Control Water Resistant Sunscreen ($28), with a SPF 30. You can get protection for 40 minutes of water activity with it. My usually sun chapped lips were grateful for the SPF 30 Lip Saver ($8) -loved the minty smell. Since I actively try not to get a suntan, the Made in the Shade – Self-tanner Sunscreen helped me to get a little color. The Liquid Sunshine – tan enhancer ($28), helped me to extend my fake golden tan, while protecting me from the real sun’s rays (in a SPF 15). We also tried the REality Moisturizing Sunscreen in a SPF 8. It worked nicely, but I actively stayed out of the sun and prefer the lowest SPF I go from May to September to be an SPF 15 for everyday, SPF 30 and above if I know I’ll be in the sun. I liked the REality Day Creme (that also had an SPF 8), this will be worn in after September ends.

Looking for a fast solution? Try Shady Day’s Daily Sun Protection Wipes (SPF 30). Like most moms, I always have baby wipes on me, why not also carry Shady Day’s sun protection wipes? They come in packs of 15 or 5 wipes. They contain Vitamin E, A, mango fruit extract, cactus flower extract and organic aloe vera plus sun protection (Actocrylene 10%, Actinoxate 7.5%, Oxybenzone 3%).Get some at the Shady Day website or click here for other retailers.
Another great mention goes to Colorescience. I admit I HATE putting any lotions or creams on my face, so their Sunforgettable line of SPF 30 Mineral Powder comes in either a brush applicator, roll on, large or small cannister. I tried out the brush applicator in "all clear" (there is "almost clear" and "perfectly clear"), but since I am so fair, I tried with "all clear" and it was perfect. This powder offers instant sun protection and it worked wonderfully. Its made of 12% micronized zinc oxide for UVA and UVB protection, 12% micronized titanium dioxide for UVA and UVB protection and sea minerals to protect your cells against ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
