Matt Lauer is a "cheesy" dad
After a long morning’s work, Matt Lauer likes to kick back with hiskids. The Today Show host says there’s no better way to relax than tohang out with Jack Matthew, 6, Romy, 3 1/2, and Thijs, almost 9 months, his children withwife Annette Roque.
The truth is I unwind with my kids. Eighty percent of the time, I’m theone giving them baths. It’s not a chore, it’s 15 minutes of realquality time. Then the kids pick a book, and we have story time beforebed. Those are the things that I look forward to the most.
Having kids has brought balance to his life, Matt, says. Forawhile, his top priority was his career until fatherhood gave him someperspective.
On a day-to-day level, I love watching my kids accomplish the littlethings that seem trivial but are really milestones: seeing my son hit abaseball, or watching my daughter draw something that actually lookslike what she says she’s drawing. Or hearing them say ‘I love you.’ I’ma sucker for that stuff — I’m right up there with the cheesiest of dads.
The 49-year-old says he and Annette try to schedule some alone time together, but it’s not easy to escape their home life.
We fall into the same trap that most parents do: Even if it startswith just a funny story about what one of the kids did, before long, the conversation has turned into a discussion about school orafter-school activities or schedules. We really try hard, though, notto do that too much. We try to remember that this was a relationshipeven before there were kids.
