Lindsay Davenport: "Being a mother is pretty wild"

Lindsay Davenport, 31, returns to tennis this week in doubles, with Lisa Raymond, at Pilot Pen in New Haven, Conn. Along for the trip is her and husband Jon Leach’s new son, Jagger Jonathan, 10 weeks, whom she delivered two weeks before picking up a racquet again. Adjusting to motherhood and training for a comeback simultaneously may sound stressful and arduous, but for Lindsay, it was anything but.

It’s been a blast. Being a mother is pretty wild. Anyone who has a child knows that your life changes, your responsibilities change. But I’ve felt my whole life that I’ve wanted to be a mother. It’s a lot of balancing right now between practicing and spending time with him. But it’s going to be really exciting to get back out there again.

While excited, the three-time champion is also in shock as to how immediate her return is — not for herself, but for her son.

I can’t believe I’m subjecting him to this at such a young age.

I feel she said contradicts herself. “Anyone who has a child knows that your life changes, your responsibilities change. But I’ve felt my whole life that I’ve wanted to be a mother.” So if her responsibilities changed wouldn’t she have dedicated more time to being a mom before she hit the courts again? I think it is great that she felt comfortable enough to start practicing again 10 days postpartum (though I couldn’t imagine doing that 10 days after I gave birth) but what about enjoying the motherhood you have “waited for your whole life”……
