Ani DiFranco talks about making 'baby inspired' music

In a recent interview, singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco revealed that her upcoming 2008 album — the first since giving birth to daughter Petah Lucia, 7-months on Monday — will definitely be ‘baby inspired.’  Ani is currently in the studio recording tracks, but like most new moms, she admits that she finds herself working in fits and spurts — a phenomenon she calls ‘baby time.’

I don’t have uninterrupted hours anymore, so it’s probably going to be a more protracted process than usual. But that will give me time to reflect on it prior to the release, which is a new thing for me and probably a good thing, too.

Another relatively new thing for Ani, who has always been outspoken on social issues, is an emphasis on going green.  According to Ani, the birth of Petah made working to save the environment take on new importance in her home, which she shares with partner Mike Napolitano.

I’ve only recently come around to that as a political priority. I’m recognizing that we’re dooming our children if we don’t address it now.

Petah is the first child for Ani and Mike.
