Mo'Nique on staying grounded and raising twins

Her success as a comedienne, actress and reality show host has allowedMo’Nique to afford the best for her family, which includes husbandSidney Hicks, sons Shalon, 17, and twins Jonathan and David, 21 months.However, she was brought back down to earth recently when Shalon, her son from her first marriage to Mark Jackson,reminded her of their humble beginnings.

We were doing the nursery and Shalon said, ‘Mommy, remember when mycrib was in the dining room of the one-bedroom apartment and now they’ve gotflat screens?’ He made me take a step back and think. I was tripping.

Mo’Nique, 39,also adds that it can get tough trying to balance everything around thehouse, especially with the twins’ different personalities.

David can play by himself, but Jonathan is the fire and needs the attention.

I really do admire Mo’Nique. She seems like one of the few celebrities that can have an outrageous, fun-loving, over-the top, hilarious persona in movies/TV/etc, but in real life she’s so grounded and kind.

Does that mean there are flatscreen tv’s in the nursery? That’a little over the top but good for her that she managed to make a better life for herself and her family.

I like her! Sometimes I have to do the step-back too. It’s easy to become bogged down in the material world and keeping up appearances. Then I think back to when I was a child and I was so happy! I didn’t have all these expensive camps and videogames and vacations. I spent most of my summers in the library and riding my bike to the corner store to buy the new Nerds flavor. Happiest kid in the world! Life is funny.

I hope she goes on to add some girls to her family also. She is such a strong, empowered woman that I think she would raise some confident, intelligent daughters too.
