Celebrating Celebrity Baby Birthdays – August Miklos Friedrich Hermann
Happy Birthday August. You are now one year old!
Name: August Miklos Friedrich Hermann
Birthday: June 28th, 2006
August is famous for being the first child of actress and celebrity baby in her own right, Mariska Hargitay and husband, Peter Hermann. The couple were married in 2004 — Mariska is also the daughter of Mickey Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield. Pink was Jayne’s signature color, and so when Mariska and Peter married, Mariska wore a subtle shade of the color for her Carolina Herrera gown. Jayne died when Mariska was 3, and Mickey in September last year.
They chose all of their son’s names from family history – August has been a name in Peter’s family for over 200 years, Miklos is Mariska’s father’s given name, and Friedrich was the name of Peter’s paternal grandfather.

Mariska and Peter introduced August to the world via TV Guide. Although she had hoped for a natural delivery, Mariska required a c-section. (Although she does not say why in the article, we were told it was a combination of the baby’s size due to gestational diabetes and a stalled labor). Mariska says;
I’m not a fan of surgery…but I wanted a healthy baby.
August was a whopping 10 lbs 9 oz, and 22 inches long.
- Jayne Mansfield – the stunning sex symbol of the 1950s who was in Playboy and won a Golden Globe (The Wayward Bus).
- Mickey Hargitay – the Hungarian bodybuilder who was Mr. Universe in 1955

What they said:
On working, loving it and having August with her.
After having the baby I was off for six months, and in eight years I’ve never been off for so long. So you’d think you’d get rusty. [But] then I had my child, and thought, ‘I’ll never be able to leave his side again. I have to get off the show. But as soon as I went back to SVU it was truly like — after an hour and a half — it was like I never left.’ I thought, ‘How could this happen? How, in the eighth year, could I be completely revitalized, re-energized, re-inspired to approach this in a new way?’ And it was obviously a gift to have my son able to come to work with me every day. I don’t feel like I’m pulled…I feel like I’m so lucky because I’m living my dream. I didn’t have to choose.
Mariska is breastfeeding, and recently started using an electric pump – which brought other things to mind!
I could not stop laughing because you see yourself in this new light. You feel like a dairy cow. So, I put a stuffed cow on top of the pump!
When she first learned she was pregnant, Mariska said she was more than ecstatic.
Nobody wanted to be pregnant more than me. From the minute I found out, I was wearing full-on maternity pants. My stomach was totally flat, mind you, but I was just so excited.
But the 15-hour work days on the set of Law and Order: SVU combined with the stress of an increase in episodes filmed each week caused Mariska to resort to food for comfort. She says;
I was overwhelmed by my lack of energy. All I could do to survive was to eat.
By her third trimester, Mariska had gained 54 pounds and contracted gestational diabetes, which caused her to make some changes in what she ate.
First time pregnant, you’re like, I gotta eat more! I have to make sure he has enough of every single food group! I did get into eating too much. This pregnancy was really hard for me at the end. I wasn’t mobile. Next time, I want to keep myself as strong as possible, so everything will go easier for me.
With hopes of getting pregnant again soon, Mariska enlisted the help of Peak Performance, a gym in New York City. She says;
After getting pregnant I felt so different about my body. I felt like it was a sanctuary, like August’s house. It was like, somebody lives there now—I’ve got to keep it nice and strong and healthy for him. And so now I’m thinking that someone else is going to live there someday soon, so I’ve got to get it ready. It’s very exciting.
When she first started working out three times per week with her trainer, Jay Wright, Mariska felt intimidated, but soon found the hard work helped her get her pre-baby body back. In addition, because she is breast-feeding, she made some changes to her diet, which also helped her slim down. She focuses on eating in balance – lean meats with lots of vegetables and fruit – and keeps that great perspective that makes her one of our favorite celebrity moms. She says;
For me, it was never about how I looked. I’m a mom now… I feel like a superhero! After my c-section, I had a pouch on my belly for a long time, which has started going away, but all I can say is that it was a badge of honor. I was so proud of it. I felt like I joined the coolest club in the world—the mom’s club.
Mariska’s been waiting her whole life to be a mom – and when the moment arrived, she was overwhelmed.
When I first heard August’s cry, that’s when I lost it. You have so much love that you didn’t even know about.
