Princes William and Harry talk to ABC; remember their mother

06/14/2007 at 11:18 PM ET

Prince William and Prince Harry spoke to Stephanie Kennedy for Australia’s ABC about their mother and how they remember her. The pair are organizing a concert to make the 10th anniversary of her death. Princess Diana died in a car accident in a Paris tunnel and until now, her two boys have not spoken out about their mother’s death. Here are the highlights:

On remembering their mother and how they dealt with her loss.

William:

For us, we were so lucky to have her as our mother and we, you know, there’s not a day goes past that we, sort of, don’t think about her and miss her influence because she was a massive example to both of us. And it’s one of those things that is very sad but you learn to deal with it and there are plenty of other people out there who have got the same or worse problems that we’ve had.

Harry:

The nicest thing for the fact that she was our mother, she had a public side and then she had a private side and the private side was very small in comparison to the public side, obviously, but the memories that we’ve got of her, I think we’re very lucky to have those memories because they’re so private, between us. And that’s the nicest thing about it, is that you see her get slated for such and such but the personal memories that we have of her are very much private and that’s where hopefully it’ll always be.

The boys acknowledge their mother’s mistakes. But what really matters is the effect she had on them. Says William,

She did everything because she felt it was right and it was what she wanted to do. She didn’t go by what she thought was the best thing to do or be told to do something. She’d do it from her heart and fully immerse herself into it and she cared, she cared massively.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their mothers’ death the boys have organized a memorial concert to be held on July 1st. After the constant media scrutiny, the concert is a way for the public to be encouraged to remember Diana in a positive light. William says,

After 10 years there’s been a rumbling of people bringing up the bad and over time people seem to forget, or have forgotten, just all the amazing things she did and what an amazing person she was. And we sort of felt that this was the best way of bringing that back to life and letting people remember all the good things about her because she’s not here to defend herself when she gets criticized and so we want to do that instead and this is the best way of us getting that across to people.

The performers include Elton John, who wrote the infamous Candle in the Wind for Diana, Tom Jones and Duran Duran. Prince Harry hopes it will be one big party.

To celebrate her life with a concert, with music and people just smiling and having fun, hopefully which is what they’re going be doing, waving their arms in the air, you know, like they just don’t care. You know, I don’t think there’s any better way to celebrate her life.

I admire both William and Harry for the way they have been so brave and the way they have dealt with their mother’s death and her memory. I will never forget watching Diana’s funeral and I was astounded, at the age of 14, of their resolve and how stoic they both were at such young ages. I couldn’t imagine how they could be so composed when they had just lost their parent. I would have been a mess.

And I understand how they feel about every day thinking about their mum. My father passed away a month ago and I think about him more than ever. At 24 it’s not fair that I have lost my father, and at the ages of 12 and 15 it was especially unfair to them to lose their mother.

I really wish I could be at her concert on July 1st, but I will be thinking of them.

Actually, the above was not spoken to Stephanie Kennedy, but to Matt Lauer for NBC-TV in the USA. I’ve seen the interview.

I think that it is really sad that William and Harry still have to publicly grieve the loss of their mother and defend her. I know that they were the ones who decided to speak publicly but it just seems unfair. Let poor Diana rest in peace.

I feel so bad for these boys, William is my age and I can’t imagine losing my mom so young like they did. They seem to have a good head on their shoulders though, and I’m sure Diana would be very proud. They sure are tall boys, 6’2 and 6’3 I heard. William looks just like his mom.

Um, “Candle in the Wind” was originally written for Marilyn Monroe.

He rewrote the lyrics when Diana died from “Goodbye Norma Jean” to “Goodbye England’s Rose”

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
