Jessica Lynch talks about her 'Daddy's girl'
Jessica Lynch, who testified recently before Congress about time she spent as a prisoner of war in an Iraqi hospital in 2003, says that her 4 1/2-month-old daughter Dakota Ann with fiance Wes Robinson is "definitely a Daddy’s girl."
I’m glad they have such a wonderful bond because he works at night in maintenance and doesn’t get to see her as much as he’d like.
The baby is named after Jessica’s good friend and fellow soldier Lori Piestewa, who died after their military convoy was attacked. Dakota means ‘friend’ in a Native American language, and Lori was the first Native American woman to die in combat for America on foreign soil, Jessica noted. The injuries she herself suffered as a result of the incident left Jessica wondering if she’d even be able to conceive a baby, let alone carry to full-term.
[Dakota]‘s a miracle because I didn’t know if my injuries would prevent me from having children…The final weeks of my pregnancy were tough — but so worth it. Probably the hardest part came when I was in the hospital. After I gave birth, I was woozy from the anesthesia, and I couldn’t feel anything below my waist. I didn’t have my glasses, so I couldn’t see. For a moment, it brought me back to that fear I felt when I first woke up in the enemy hospital.
Jessica said she would still be a soldier today if things in Iraq had gone differently, and for that reason, she said Dakota can pursue a similar path someday — if she chooses.
Sometimes I get asked if I want Dakota to join the army. I’ll allow her to make her own decisions.
