Nelly Furtado on the 'emotional whirlwind' of weaning

06/05/2007 at 04:18 PM ET

Nelly Furtado recently mused that much of the energy behind her third album Loose came from the fact that she recorded the album the same month she weaned her then 2-year-old daughter Nevis

Maybe I did feel liberated.  I finally went ‘Oh, my body’s finally mine again — yippee!

The 29-year-old singer maintained a carefree — if not exhausting — schedule at the time.  Newly separated from Nevis’ father, DJ Jasper Gahunia – with whom she splits custody of their now 3 1/2-year-old daughter — Nelly said her newfound sense of freedom was inevitably relayed on to her record.

Breakups are liberating, but then, also, motherhood’s liberating…I’d go to the beach till about 8 p.m. with my daughter, then I’d go to the studio with till 4 a.m., then I’d sleep for about three hours.  I went through this weird phase where I was sleep-deprived.  Most of the times it’s funny, thank goodness.

It’s always great to hear about a celebrity who nurses for more than a year. Perhaps if more celebrities do it, more people will see it as “normal” and won’t be weirded out by it.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
