Mary & Heather live in Virginia, as do I. To my (limited) knowledge, state law prohibits Heather from adopting Samuel. But I hope somehow they can get around that. I realize that’s not fair to the Commonwealth’s other gay & lesbian parents, but perhaps they can set a new standard that will help everyone else.

Maybe Cheney is not so supportive–this was on eonline.com in Ted Casablanca’s column:

Mary Cheney, the Vice Prez’s lesbian daughter, must have one either very pissed off or pushed off partner. Heather Poe, Mary’s partner of 15 damn years, was essentially treated like dog s–t when Dick Cheney’s office recently announced that M.C. had given birth to her dad’s sixth grandchild and that Poe would have no legal or parental rights whatsoever to the child.

I’m not a fan of Cheney’s politics, but he and Lynne are stand-up parents and grandparents. I think that’s one reason they rushed to have a picture with the baby — they want it known they love and are proud of their daughter and grandson.

He’s sweet and I love his name, although I wonder why it’s not hyphenated with Heather’s. Perhaps later, like the Jolie-Pitts.

And I’m laughing at his squinty newborn face. He’s like, leave me alone! Let me sleep!

Who cares about whether or not you like Dick Cheney, his wife, and/or their political/personal views? Who cares if his daughter is a lesbian or not? Mary and Heather are two loving people who will raise a child with love….their sexual preference means nothing to a newborn. To each his own, I say and congratulations to them!

The Cheneys may be supportive of their lesbian daughter, but that doesn’t make them supportive of gay rights or gay marriage.

Kate, by writing “partnerships/marriage” the way you do it seems like you might not completely grasp all the issues involved. Many gay and lesbian couples do indeed have partnerships but what they want (and deserve) are marriages, with all the legal rights that come with it: adoption, inheritance, insurance, tax benefits, Social Security, etc.

As far as I know, in their political lives the Cheneys haven’t really done much of anything in support of legal rights for gay couples.

Thank you to the person who posted that Lynne and Dick are not opposed to gay partnerships/marriage. They aren’t! Get your facts straight!

Congrats! About the no father comment, my parents divorced when i was six months old. My father had nothing to do with us so i grew up with out a father and i got along just fine. At least he will have two mothers to love him.

People seem to think Dick and Lynne are opposed to gay rights/gay marriage.
They arent!

am i the only one who thinks it odd that they barely waited a few hours after the birth to get out an “official” photograph?

The baby is lovely, such a bundle of joy!Of course his grandmother and grandfather are happy, like all grandparents are happy about new grandson! On the other hand it is sad, for the baby, that he will never have a father, and although I’m sure he will be loved by his family, the father will be missing in his life.
