Ju-Ju-Be Diaper Bags: Combing innovation and fashion

05/22/2007 at 10:49 AM ET

Packabe06_perkyBritney Spears is the latest celebrity parent to own a Ju-Ju-Be, a high-end line of baby bags and accessories packed with innovation and fashion. Partnering with DuPont, Ju-Ju-Becreated the first line of teflon-treated diaper bags that repel stains. They were also the first to include an antimicrobial treatment to killsgerms, mold and fungus.

The company tells us that Britney picked up the Pack-a-Be,a backpack style diaper bag, in the Perennials pattern at the Nordstromat The Grove in LA.  Later she was photographed wearing the bag headingfor Orlando. True it’s a stylish diaper bag, but we didn’t see her little ones withher, so we think she just thinks it’s an awesome bag, no matter whatits use! (Check out Britney with the bag here and here.)

Inside_packabeI have the Pack-a-Be in Lush Paisley and think it’s the bomb.  It’s so roomy, with good size pockets, and the smartly bright liningso you can actually find stuff. I’m a big fan of the magnetic closeexterior pockets too.  You just have to love their loud-and-proudpatterns.  If you don’t love them, they do have very sedate options-black with lime or silver trim and brown with pink or blue trim. I dofind the Pack-A-Be to be slightly heavy so it’s not for quick jaunts.

Their other bag stylesinclude a diaper changing kit, a wristlet, a diaper-only bag, amessenger bag, a toddler tote, a small diaper bag (for short trips),and "dad" bags (you know, not loud-and-proud or pink).

I also like their coordinating silvertone accessorieswhich include a "snack capsule," which we use to bring Anya’s foodwherever we go- we call it her feedbag, a "mess  shuttle" for dirtyclothes, a "wardrobe station" for an extra set of clothes, and a"bottle and sippy rocket" to keep those drinks cool.  I love that youcan throw all of these things into the bag and reload them and alwaysbe ready to go.

They put as much thought into their websitetoo.  Not only do they show you what the inside of each bag looks like,a forum to discuss issues and suggestion, they also have a coolfeature- the IRL Gallery- photos of their very satisfied customers with their bags and what fits in their bags.

Other celeb parents who have been sent Ju-Ju-Be bags include Matt Damon, Tom Cruise (who received the
JJB Dad Bag),  Katie Holmes, and Jennifer Garner.

Ju-Ju-Be was one of many companies who, participating in our Holiday Project, sent over $450 of their productsto Good Shepherd, a leading youthdevelopment and family service agency that serves over 18,000 clients ayear.

WORST DIAPER BAG EVER! I cannot begin to describe the contempt I feel for this bag.

It’s tiny and difficult to even get over my shoulders — I am only average height and weight.

The straps are thin and easily get twisted. There is no comfort here, padding, or support.

There is some weighted bar at the top of the straps. If you try to grab it to sling the pack over your shoulder (as most people who wear backpacks do) it will pull the straps tight to the pack. It makes a simple thing like throwing a pack over your shoulder very complicated.

The only plus: Sippy cup holders inside and out.

If you consider yourself the kind of person who would enjoy a backpack style diaper bag, do yourself a favor and just get a North Face or something from REI. The baby ones are just too determined to be cute, totally missing the point of comfort and function.

"We weren't trying to have kids. We left it up to fate. I knew there was a possibility, but I was really excited. Even if you are trying, just to see a positive result is shocking!"
