Naomi Watts and her pregnancy fitness regime

Actress Naomi Watts, who is expecting her first child in July, is keeping fit during pregnancy via Pilates. Involving large amounts of stretching, pilates is excellent for keeping fit. Naomi’s instructor, Daniel Loigerot, tells PEOPLE that it is important to continue exercise during pregnancy, and Naomi is doing this via attending two Pilates classes a week. Daniel gives three tips for pregnant women who want to use Pilates as a form of exercise during pregnancy;

  • Don’t lay on your back during exercise. Baby weight can compress blood vessels in the abdomen. Instead, lie on your side, sit or stand.
  • Don’t overstretch. When you’re pregnant, your muscles get looser, so joint stability decreases and you can pinch a nerve.
  • Breathe. Getting oxygen to muscles is key; "You’re breathing for two now."
