Teri Hatcher talks about making motherhood a priority, and having another baby

In an appearance today on The View, single mom Teri Hatcher said her daughter Emerson Rose, 9, would very much "like to be a big sister."  The Desperate Housewives actress admitted that both she — and her therapist — have grappled with the idea of Teri having another baby for some time now, but no consensus on the issue has yet been reached.

That’s something I’ve been thinking about for years…I don’t feel done.  That’s all that feels clear to me.

Teri is now involved in a serious relationship with director Stephen Kay, himself father to a 12-year-old daughter named Lilly, and said that the decision to re-enter the singles scene was not one she took lightly. 

I’ve always made mothering the priority of my life.  Over my career, over everything.  Dating…you have to really make time for it, and I’ve met a guy worth doing that.

For Mother’s Day, Teri, Emerson and Teri’s mom Esther continued their tradition — now four years strong — of spending the day at Hollywood Park.  The threesome ate chocolate and watched the horse races in what Teri deemed their own personal version of the Kentucky Derby. Although, by law, Emerson was not allowed to exchange any money at the betting window, she was clearly the day’s big winner with a little help from her mother, who jokingly acknowledged that "it’s a little like teaching your kids how to gamble."

Emerson picked all the winners, all day, by of course — their names.  Which is how we all should do it.  She’s in third grade, so I really made it kind of a math experience.  I gave her a certain amount of dollar bills and and she knew she had to divide them up by how many races there were, and figure out the odds…I made myself believe I was giving her math lessons.

In addition to their day at the races, Emerson gave Teri a gold ring for Mother’s Day and a ring holder, which she made out of clay.

She should if she feels like her body could go throught it. LOL. Or maybe she should, you know, adopt. I am sure her daughter would like a sibling either way.

I love the how Teri AND her therapist have contemplated her having another child, LOL!
It would be great if she had another child. She seems like a wonderful mother to Emerson.

I think it would be great. Surely her body can go thru it. Actually would like to see her have a couple more. Lol I thought it was funny too how her therapist is involved in this decision making.

I would love for Teri to have another child. She seems like such a great mom to Emerson and I’m sure she would do just as great a job with another child.

No actually she is not too old. I am thinking with the way some of the thoughts are – women should really go thru menopause before they reach 40 – looks like someone made a mistake. I think she would be a wonderful mother and as I have posted before there are plenty of celebrities we have seen here having their first and second and even third in their 40s.. i.e. Mariska Hargitay, Nancy Odell, Salma Hayek, and many others – the swimmer, cannot remember her name. This has been common for all generations and it didn’t use to be such a big deal for a woman in her 40s to have 2, 3, 4 children. The AMA has just given us statistics now. And if we always let the statistics deter us, we wouldn’t accomplish much. I wish her well and if she wants another child, I hope she goes for one.

Menopause is when a woman stops having periods. A woman of 40 is not too old to get pregnant. With the medical technology of today a woman can have a very healthy baby in her 40′s. Some my daughters’ friends mother’s have remarried and have young childen with a new spouse. These women are great mom’s, they survived being mom to “two’s” and “teen’s”. I have been told that having children after a big age gap is a totally different and wonderful experience. My youngest is 13 and I would not want to start over again, but that is my personal decision. I would not knock an older mom for wanting more children.

I agree Judy. I get so tired of seeing the naysayers. The reason I mentioned menopause is that some seem to want to shut down wombs before their time – and my comment was actually to point out that if this was really what God intended, we would all go thru menopause before we hit 40 but obviously thats not the case. I see women with children with age gaps. They seem to work it out just fine. I believe those late babies are very much wanted and loved. Or so that seems to be the case with what I have seen.

I’m not “knocking” older moms. No need to get defensive. I just thought Teri Hatcher was maybe in her 50′s. She looked older than 40′s to me, that’s all.
