Rev Run on parenting

\MTV’s The Run’s House preacher, Joseph Simmons, also known as ‘Rev Run,’ talked to TV Guide about his family, teaching kids about money, and his ministry. Rev Run first opened up about the mistakes he feels some parents are making, saying,

The problem with some parents today is that they think that once their kids hit 17 or 18 years old, its time to loosen the leash. But that’s when they need their parents the most. When you’re 17 or 18 is when you are choosing boyfriends or girlfriends, and it’s when people offer you drugs.

He then offered his advice, what he does with his kids, to ensure they stay away from drugs.

God willing, you won’t see my children — Jojo, 17; Angela, 20; Russy, 10; Diggy, 12; and Vanessa, 24 — in the tabloids like other celebs’ kids. The Reason: I’m on top of my game. I’m mentoring. I speak to them. We read together, study together, go bowling together and pray. We’re close knit. And we discuss what we want to do with our lives.

And when asked about whether or not he spoils his kids, Run had this to say:

[The kids] grew up watching me hustle. Now they have to go out and make their mark in this world. My kids are not spoiled. Everything is on a point system in my house. You do good-you’ll get something. If you’re bad — you get penalized. As they start to make money with this MTV show, I manage it, like my father did with me.

I believe when he says his kids aren’t spoiled and he makes them work for it. He shows just that in each and every episode of Run’s House. But that’s a good thing to see that even though he has money and could virtually give his kids whatever they wanted, he’s instilled pretty damn good values in them all and they realize not everything is given to them on a silver platter, or will be when they venture out into the world on their own.

I never like it when people think that their parenting is so great. It feels like a kick to people whose children went “bad”. His way of parenting sounds pretty suffocating and it could lead to his children rebelling.

I love the fact that the Simmonses are not afraid to parent. They are not afraid to let their children know that there are boundaries and they are open to respectful dialogue. The children don’t have to wonder what their parents think. They have been guided-and Lord knows the 20-something set needs guidance. We’ve seen overly permissive parenting – hello Lohans, Hiltons, Spears, Richies and I think it’s nice to highlight another way.

His kids now have a lot of pressure on them
to not make any mistakes.

I know plenty of kids who grew up in strict
homes who rebelled. People have free choice
and sometimes make the wrong choices, even
if their parents tried to be at the top of
their game.
