Johnny Depp speaks publicly about daughter's illness for first time
In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, actor Johnny Depp revealed the depths of the "great scare" he had recently when daughter Lily-Rose fell ill with a potentially-fatal E. Coli infection. Johnny and his longtime girlfriend (and possible fiance) Vanessa Paradis maintained a constant vigil at Lily-Rose’s bedside during the 9-day ordeal at a London hospital, but it was the 7-year-old patient — suffering from kidney failure brought on by the bacteria — who instead kept them strong.
What got us through wasn’t the strength of Vanessa or me but our daughter and her incredible ability to make us feel OK even though she was very unwell. She was super-strong.
Lily-Rose has since fully recovered from her illness — a period Johnny refers to as "a bumpy patch" — but the incident has nonetheless had a lasting impact on their young family, which includes Lily-Rose’s brother Jack, 5.
It was a reminder to us of how lucky we are to be able to breathe, walk, talk, think and surround ourselves with people we love.
