Um, is it just me or does anyone else find the strapless dress to be a bit, well, distasteful on such a young little girl? It’s a very pretty dress, but is it age appropriate? Maybe I’m just too old fashioned…

- Anna on

Does anyone know which designer made this dress? I think it’s beautiful, but Emerson could have used a shawl or a little open-top to go over it. It is a bit bare on top. Let me know if anyone knows the designer. Thanks!

- aquaocean on

I agree with you Anna! A tank style or possibly spaghetti straps would have helped tremendously! A wrap of some sort might have helped also, but it is very pretty. (Not age appropriate at all!)
She IS a very beautiful young girl!!

- momof2girlies on

She is only 9! I totally agree with Anna. This dress is way too old for a 9 yr old.

- Tracy on

I agree– this dress is not age appropriate!

- Rae on

Yeah she looks beautiful but I would not let my 9year old out of the house looking that grown up. It just feels a little icky.

- Brooke on

I think that Emerson looks like a beautiful, young lady. I don’t have a problem with the style of her dress…I think she looks gorgeous.

- Mandy on

What a little beauty!

I love this mother/daughter duo!

- LaMama on

I’m at looking at the same dress as the rest of you!?! I think its perfectly fine for a girl her age to wear a strapless dress. Its not like its hanging low and its a very long dress so everything is finely covered. I’m sure she felt like a princess in it. She sure looks like one!

- Heather on

my first thought was how ‘adult looking’ this dress was for a 9 year old. I dont have children but I dont think I would let my daughter leave the house with a dress like that. i understand it was an important event but some kind of coverage would have been good!

- Kim on

I think she’s looks lovely! It’s just for one night and I bet she loved feeling all grown up for a few hours, don’t all little girls want to imitate mom?

- Sarita on

Very cute dress, but I would probably not have put it on my 8 year old. Maybe my 12 year old…with a shawl. Emerson is beautiful! Looks just like Teri did years ago (Tango & Cash). Emerson is going to be such a knockout!!

- tink1217 on

Not appropriate at all for a 9 year old unless you are preparing her to go the Britney/Paris/Lindsay route. Sometimes let kids be kids and let them dress like kids. Why rush them to grow up? And how much fun would that dinner had been to a 9 year old?

- J-LIn on

Oh come on! This is a beautiful dress! Maybe she did have a shawl and she just isn’t wearing it in the picture. And please, as for being age appropriate–go to any beach these days and you see babies in bikinis!! Now that is tacky! Cute, I know, but when you think about bathing suits for girls…this dress is way more elegant and totally fine. It’s frustrating that some folks would even think of this beautiful dress in a disgusting way. It’s gorgeous! RELAX!

- Janet on

If there was a shawl, it would be soooo much better. But there is something about the strapless part of the dress that erks me. Other than that she is a beautiful little girl and looks gorgeous in the dress!

- Cassie on

I think it’s a very pretty dress. I do think it’s a bit adult looking but I think she looks classy and not at all inappropriate. I’ve seen girls her age where I live that are wearing much less.

- halifaxhoney on

Beautiful dress on a beautiful girl! I guess I’m in the minorit but I don’t see what’s wrong with her wearing it. It’s like like it shows a lot of skin. It’s long and it covers her boobies.

- Ashley on

I love love love this dress. she sees mom goin out in beautiful dresses all the time and I am sure wanted to look grown up for one night!
Whom makes this!!
Lori

- lori taylor on

I think it’s absolutely adorable!

- Ashley on

I had the same thought but figured maybe I was the only one! She looks amazing but it’s a bit revealing. I’m not even sure how it’s staying up. I think with a nice black bolero it would be perfect!

- Jessie on

i think the dress is fine for because SHE DOESN’T HAVE ANY BOOBIES! like spaghetti straps would help the dress; it’s already up and probably double-stick taped to her chest. straps would just detract from how pretty it looks. and i think it’s fine for her to get dressed up for one night. if you’ve seen other pictures, she’s usually very covered up and wears very age appropriate clothes anyway.

- lee on

Uh.. dont they make BIKINIS from small children??? The first thing I thought when I saw the post was just how many people were going to not like the dress. I just dont think it’s a big deal.

- Liza on

I think that Teri Hatcher’s daughter looks stunning – like a princess at a ball. The dress is beautifully made and not inappropriate at all!! So it doesn’t have straps? Its full-length and the neckline isn’t low at all. Really, what would a shawl do? Cover up the dress and this isn’t a dress you cover up. I bet she felt like a million bucks that night :)

- Heather on

I’m confused at what exactly she should be “covering up”? There’s nothing there to cover! She’s still practically a baby. I think the dress is lovely and I also think Teri seems like a really wonderful mom. And Emerson is so cute.

- melanie on

I think the dress was way to old for her. I would never allow it with my girls. You can find something pretty with out going their. She has not even developed yet why wear a dress that is designed for sexual appeal and showing cleavage which she hasn’t even developed yet. I think it is very tacky for a child to wear it.

- JoyJoy on

My main issue is why on earth would Teri want to subject her daughter to the White House Correspondents dinner? Surely they could have found some other way to bond over the weekend.

This dress was a bit inappropriate for Emmerson. But I guess this is just Teri’s style. There were recent pics of both Mom and daughter vacationing on a beach and they were both in bikini’s too.

- Elsie on

All the people on this post that said this dress was fine are the parents of the kids I don’t let my kids play with. She’s beautiful but she gives me that feeling I get when I look at pictures of Jonbenet Ramsey.

Teri should make friends with women her own age instead of trying to turn her 9-year-old into a ‘desperate housewife’.

- J-LIn on

I think she looks fine. As for the Britney/ Paris/ Nicole route, had she been in a strapless dress up at her thighs with sky-high heels and day-glow make-up, I’d be worried.

She’s completely covered, and looks very classy. I see nothing wrong with it. Let her get dressed up and feel like a princess for one night.

- Traci on

Ha. “All the people on this post that said this dress was fine are the parents of the kids I don’t let my kids play with.” Do people really think because someone has a different view that means their children aren’t fit to play with? That gets under my skin. With an attitude like that we are just raising “I’m too good for you” kids. That is the kind of thought that creates mean hurtful cliques and groups in children.

- Liza on

I think the dress is beautiful! She’s a little girl, let her be a princess for a night. She’s always dressed very appropriately every other time I see her.
As for ‘subjecting’ her to a white house dinner. Every kid is different but she could very well be excited, it isn’t every day a kid gets to have dinner with the President!

- Amanda on

I am a longtime fan of Teri and I think she is a wonderful mother. She introduces Emerson to all sorts of events from Hollywood to D.C. to an African safari … and you can’t blame the kid for wanting to dress up to meet the president. I think she is a gorgeous child and I don’t have an issue with the dress. Yes, it is strapless, but it has a high, sweetheart neckline and a bow.

- editorjax on

It’s not that the dress is too ‘revealing’, it’s no more revealing than most dresses for kids. It’s also a very lovely dress. What erks me is that it’s a mini-me of adult dress styles. She looks like a very small grown-up, and I just don’t think that’s a correct way to dress children.

- Sabina on

I agree with most posters…that the dress is not age-appropriate, but that is only my opinion and other people are entitled to theirs. It would have looked better with straps or in a tank style which would have suited a 9-year-old much better, IMHO. I am just in no rush to see little GIRLS dress like mini women. I would not let my girls wear strapless dresses or tops at that age. In fact, I didn’t allow it until prom, but both girls chose spaghetti strap styles, not strapless dresses. Having said that, Emerson is absolutely beautiful and looks so much like her father, Jon Tenney. She’s a gorgeous and sweet-looking little girl!

- PinkRoses on

Why does she need straps? I never knew that you had to be a certain age before it became appropriate to show your shoulders. It isn’t low-cut or tarty. It looks very classy, IMO. I dobut I’d let my daughter wear a dress like that at 9, but I wouldn’t really have a problem with other parents who do.

- ix on

The problem is not that it’s revealing it’s that it looks very adult and at 9 years old it is simply too old for her. I was not allowed to wear a strapless dress until I was in high school. She is still a child. Why rush growing up. Too many mom’s are pushing their little girls into growing up too soon. And as for the people who say that they make little kid bikinis, well I wouldn’t let me kids wear those either! I don’t think Teri is a bad mom, I just think that moms get carried away making their kids into little beauty queens.

- Brooke on

Since when did CBB turn into an insult forum?

Teri is a responsible parent and it is her
choice what she allows her daughter to wear.
Children’s dress styles are a matter of
personal taste. How would some of you
critics feel if people judged your kid’s
outfits?

- Karen on

Her daughter is pretty, and looks fine IMO. Not such a sexy dress yet, because her daughter has no boobs, and she is not wearing say low rise pants or anything like that.

- gabriella on

Bare shoulders!?! What next, bare ankles? Gasp! Welcome to 2007, we are no longer in the Victorian era ladies. All her little bits are well covered, what is the problem? It’s not like she’s wearing a showgirl type dress like JonBenet or something, and she’s 9. Lots of people put little girls in bathing suits and that reveals a lot more skin to the world. I’m sure Emerson picked that dress herself because of her age and she looks so darn proud wearing it. Why do you have to shame women and girls who feel good about themselves?

- agtdonut on

Emerson is adorable as is the dress. For AGES there have been these summer dresses and tops made of a scrunchy material for little girls with no straps. Everyone has seen them, have probably worn them and didn’t think twice. Ther are also slinky bathing suits and bikinis for little girls. No big deal. Weirdos can look at your children if they have on parkas. That’s why it’s the parents’ responsibility to closely watch, monitor, and protect their children no matter what they are wearing. Then there is no problem.

- Ivonne on

I was tooken back at this photo because the kid is beautiful! She looks fine. It’s her attitude that matters. If she acts like her age she will look like a princess in this dress! Im sure Teri who can finacially support her daughter. Who is an active mother. who tries to expose her daughter to positive things. Doesn’t need our advice:)

- Callen on

Her lil girl dressing like this was also the one wearing the bikini that we had an issue with a while ago. I think this dress is just wayyyyy too old for her age!! For goodness sake, just let her BE a kid!

- Doreen on

I’m very conservative about dressing my daughter, but I would not have a problem with this dress… why… it’s a warm night… a long gown is needed… and the only thing bare is her shoulders….

it will be practical (keep her from being too warm), is beautiful, and the neckline is perfect.

Also, if any of you have shopped for girls this age for dressy occasions like weddings and such, this is a very common style to see.

- Kat on

Emerson looks very pretty, innocent and perfectly age appropriate. She actually most resembles her father, actor Jon Tenney.
