Update: Twin boys for Westlife singer and daughter of Irish prime minister

Originally posted April 20th – updates added:Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, 28, and his high school sweetheart, Georgina Ahern Byrne, 27, welcomed twin boys at 9:55 am this morning. Rocco Bertie and Jay Nicky are fraternal twins and were born by c-section in Dublin, Ireland. Apparently, Rocco weighed in at 5 lbs, 11 oz, while Jay was 4 lbs, 8 oz, but we doubt this because they are seven weeks early and are probably closer to 3-4 lbs.

Proud new grandpa, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, said he hoped to meet the twins tonight or tomorrow.

I have been waiting for this news for awhile now. I am a HUGE Westlife fan, and Nicky has always been my favorite (can you blame me?) If those boys are half as handsome as their knock-out father, they are set!

I am soooooo happy for Nicky & Georgina. Saw Nicky a couple of weeks ago & he was so excited, I don’t think he was expecting them to arrive so soon considering he’s still touring. Nicky is the sweetest most down-to-earth guy & I wish him, Gina, Rocco & Jay all the happiness in the world!!!

Sorry, I’m a bit ignorant on the subject of twins and this may be a laughable question for all you experienced mothers – how can they tell whether twins are fraternal or identical at such a young age?

Sometimes you can tell on ultrasound – occasionally identical twins will develop in the same sac (it never fully divides, so you know they’re identical) or, there are two placentas for fraternal twins and one for identical twins (although fraternal twins placentas can fuse and appear to be one, or identical twins placenta can fully divide on occasion). The only way to tell for sure is genetic testing – identical twins will have the same DNA, and fraternal twins are no more genetically alike than regular siblings.
