Molly Shannon's breastpump speaks to her

04/13/2007 at 01:19 PM ET

Actress Molly Shannon, 41, was on The View Thursday morning and discussed the endless entertainment her breast pump provided when her children, Stella, 3 1/2, and Nolan, 2, were younger. As a toddler, Stella would do a little dance to the rhythmic sounds of the breast pump as Molly expressed her milk for six-month-old Nolan.

Molly also said she, ‘got a little crazy’ with the breast pump, especially when she was sleep-deprived. She would hear the pump when it wasn’t on, and when it was, Molly said she could swear it was taunting her, with the ‘whoosh whoosh’ sound of the pump instead saying, ‘dirty whore, dirty whore!’

Thanks to Watching the View and CBB reader Shannon at Mothering.

Anyone else had this experience? (Although hopefully you heard nicer things from your pump!)

My 2 and half yr old swears that my breast pump says “patty cake patty cake” when it is on and I am pumping for her baby brother. I hear it saying “feed the baby feed the baby” over and over. If I think about it saying that, my milk comes down right away so I guess it is a blessing in disguise that I am hearing things! :)

sometimes you guys think up the weirdest questions to put to your readers…really.

Sarah on

Yes, my breastpump spoke to me. It is a Medela PISA. I swear it would turn itself on and call to me from the living room.

Nicole on

My mom swears my breastpump says “Backhoe. Backhoe. Backhoe.”

Mine says, “Go outside! Go outside!”

HA!! I thought I was nuts!! I sit in a closet sized room with a washer and dryer in the back of a hairsalon and pump, and find myself singing along with the woosh woosh or find weird rhythmic things to say. Glad to see I’m not alone! I also hear it all the time when its not on too…

Huh. I thought I was the only one. It used to drive me nuts, because once I “heard” it start saying something, I couldn’t get it out of my head for the rest of that pumping session. I’d turn the TV up loud or put a heavy blanket over the pump, but it was no use. I still heard the “voices”, LOL.

LOL. My old Medela breastpump used to “talk” also. I have totally forgotten what it said. I used to just sit there pumping away and sort of “singing” along with it. People who have never been around an electric breast pump while it is on must think we’re all crazy.

My Medela PIS speaks, too, though it’s only said encouraging things to me such as “let it go” and “keep coming.” Once my husband swore that it said, “good job” so I knew that I wasn’t totally nuts. I have learned to tune it out because it’s a total distraction. Pumping is awkward enough without something chatting away at you.

my sister had me on speakerphone while pumping and said “doesn’t it sound like the pump is saying ‘white power’? neonazis making breastpumps? haha

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
