Julia Roberts goes green for her kids

04/11/2007 at 09:47 PM ET

With her third child due in June and raising 2 year old twins Hazel and Finn, Julia Roberts wants to start doing those ‘little things to start saving mother earth.’ During a recent interview with Elle Magazine, Julia said,

It sounds corny, but it’s true: It’s our absolute responsibility to take care of our children so that we don’t just throw up our hands and say, ‘Wow, we pretty much f–k-d this up. Good luck to ya in 50 years.’ Because we did create the problem little by little then that’s the way we’re gonna have to fix it, little by little, the best we can.

Julia is also passionate about biodiesel fuel on school buses.

I just feel that any parent who’s informed cannot put their kid on a school bus without saying to their school district or their congressman, ‘Hey, man, you gotta clean this up for us!’ Because it’s too easy not to fix.

Julia realizes that it’s small changes that can have a big impact on the environment.

Every time I go to the grocery store carrying my grocery sacks back from the time before, I feel happy, all the tiny things, I think, really do make a difference.

You may want to bleep out the f-bomb.

We don’t usually edit celeb’s comments, but we are happy to if readers are offended.

I don’t have a problem with the swearing. It’d be silly to let offense at one word take away from the powerful message she’s conveying. Personally, I think the f-word highlights how she feels about it and it would be wrong to censor it out completely.

I like that celebrities are going all out to put across an environmental message. Some people will say it’s not their place, but I think if people follow them just to follow a celebrity then something good is still being done. I think celebrity endorsements are a good first step for educating an ignorant or uncaring populace. (BTW, I’m not calling the entire general public ignorant or uncaring – but there are certainly portions of it that are.)

You know, I admire this woman more every time she speaks out. She eloquently said the very thoughts that go thru my mind daily. I worry about this all the time. When Julia said “Good luck to ya in 50 years,” that really is not a joke. The world that we know and take for granted will not exist for our grandkids!! I get so upset when the average person doesn’t ‘get it’. So I am very glad that celebs are using their voice to get the message across.

Now I know that I am in good company when I recycle my plastic shopping bags (like Julia and Cameron Diaz)and junk mail and ribbons (again, like Cameron). I mean, these people have all the money in the world and don’t do it just to be thrifty – they do it because they have a conscience!

I feel so strongly about this issue now that I’m a mom that I have become an activist in my own town. I helped establish a household medication disposal program, so residents of our community don’t have to flush old meds down the toilet (very bad!) or throw them away in the trash (also very bad). My goal is to make it a county-wide program some day. Then who knows, maybe we could establish a state disposal program eventually. :-)

Thank you Julia for your candor and passion. We need more folks like you!

It’s great Julia is talking about this problem! It’s something everyone (Parent or not!) need to focus on, and help with. She’s great!

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
