Twins pitcher Joe Nathan and wife welcome a baby girl

04/07/2007 at 10:19 PM ET

During the Minnesota Twins vs. Baltimore Orioles game Wednesday night, announcers Bert Blyleven and Dick Bremer gave the Twins fans some good news – the team’s closing pitcher, Joe Nathan and his wife had a baby girl! Joe and his wife Lisa named the baby Riley Grace and she weighed in at a healthy 8 pounds 6 ounces.
Joe was at the hospital with his wife during the birth, but was on-call and in uniform in case they needed him to come in and close the game. Lisa reportedly had the baby in the 6th inning and he came to the Metrodome to give cigars at the end of the game. What a team player! The couple have an older son named Cole, who is 2 years old.

Aww I love this! As a fellow Minnesotan and a big Twins fan, this is wonderful news! I absolutely ADORE that he was was his wife at the birth rather than being at the game…that’s a dad! And love the name Riley =)) He sounds like a totally PROUD daddy! Congrats to the Nathans!

I’m so glad this was posted–I’m a HUGE Twins fan!

Can you imagine the looks he must have gotten at the hospital in full uniform? That’s awfully sweet that he was with his wife, and a good thing that it was a home game :)

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
