Nelly Furtado's daughter misses out on mom's big "Day"

March 21 was declared "Nelly Furtado Day" in her hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, but some very important people in her life weren’t present for the ceremony. Nelly’s parents were home baby-sitting her daughter Nevis, 3 1/2, because the singer believed the event would’ve been too much for her little girl.

 

I protect her from a lot of things. She can take small doses. She’s on the road with me a lot, so she really gets the fantastical show energy every night. She’s around show business quite a bit, but a day like this I think would be a little too overwhelming for her.

 

Nevis’ dad is Nelly’s ex, Jasper "DJ Lil Jaz" Gahunia.

Her concert was also on the same day in her hometown (Victoria, B.C.), which I attended. Nelly is very down to earth and clearly a protective mama. She never brought up Nevis once, although she did mention that she was “nervous” because her “entire family was in the audience.” I totally respect Nelly as a celebrity – she’s done a great job of keeping Nevis out of the spotlight, and protecting her interests.

Oh – and to prove how down to earth Nelly is, she drove herself to the festivities in the at the City Center in, what I assume, to be a family vehicle — no limos! Love it!
