No small talk for Chandra Wilson during C-section

Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson told Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show last night about how she was caught by surprise when her doctor brought up her television medical roots during the C-section operation for her son, Michael, now 17 months.

When I was pregnant with my son, my doctor never mentioned to me that she knew anything that I was doing or that I was an actor. And it wasn’t until I was on the Cesarean table, wide open to the world, that she says over to her assistant, ‘You know she plays a doctor on TV?’ I was like, ‘This is not the time to discuss what I do!’

Chandra also has two daughters, Serena, 14, and Joy, 8, with her longtime boyfriend.

While I don’t have any crazy c-section stories, I do have a crazy stories relating to my first ever pelvic exam. My doctor at the time had a medical student or resident assigned to her, and it ended up the doctor did the exam while the med student watched and while they were examining me, the doctor turned to the med student and said, “she has a great cervix doesn’t she?” Very awkward for a first time examination, and maybe something you just shouldn’t compliment! Hopefully its a good thing though, because while I don’t have any kids now, I can’t wait to some day.

Maybe not a crazy C-section story but–about 10 minutes or so after my son was born, (in ’85) my OB was working on my tubal ligation. I was lying there, kind of zoned out, my eyes closed. All of a sudden, I felt the worst feeling in the world. I could feel a tugging sensation and I screamed. The pain was so bad! I yelled, “I can feel everything you’re doing!” My OB was shocked and started yelling at the anethesist. I blacked out (or was sedated–I don’t know which. The last thing I remember hearing was that I’d had all the meds allowed.) A nurse who took care of me told me I woke up in the recovery room, cussing about the pain but I don’t remember that. Later, my OB came to my room and said that he was sorry the anesthesia wore off, but that I had lost a lot of blood after the C-section, and he and the OR team had a lot of trouble getting the bleeding to stop. My OB had been fighting with me over getting a tubal after only two children, but with the problems that developed, he said even if I hadn’t signed the papers for the tubal, he would have done it anyway and explained later. He apologized for fighting with me and again said he was sorry. When I got his bill for the surgery (the part insurance didn’t cover) it was quite a bit under $1,000.00. So, I called his office and talked to him directly. He said he didn’t charge me his full price due to the anesthesia wearing off.

When I was in labor with my second child we arrived at the hospital and I was put into triage. When they saw that I was 9 cm already they got me into a room immediately. My water hadn’t broken yet. The plan was to break my water, push and we were all done. Doc broke my water, I pushed and I heard my doctor say “oh sh*t! Stop pushing” Not something you want to hear the doc say. The baby was breach and they rushed me in for a C. I was royally pissed because I had gone the whole labor without drugs and really wanted a natural birth. I had a C for my first and was hoping for a VBAC. On top of that this was my doctor’s first C-section in this hospital. Some of the old staff was transfered to this new hospital and were getting familiar with everything. On my way to the OR they crashed me into the automatic doors numerous times because the doors opened differently than they were used to.

I was laying on the table wide open for all to see. There were probably 15 people in the room working on me or doing various things.

2 guys (dr’s I guess) walked in and were talking about what they were going to get for lunch. They walked over to a monitor and checked something and then just stood there a second dicussing chicken salad and then left. I was like WTH?? I kinda zoned out and forgot about it awhile. After I was out of the hospital it hit me. I don’t know who they were and I thought it odd they just walked in like no big deal.

After I had my 1st son and was being stitched up it was just me and my Dr in the room when a woman came up to the dr wearing scrubs and they were talking all while staring at my stuff, I asked the other woman if she was an ob and she said no she was cleaning staff…

I had to have an emergency C after 20 hours of labour. I had been so afraid of the possibility as the idea of being awake during surgery totally freaked me out but in the end, I knew I had to do what was best for baby. They had me in the OR & ready to go in minutes but I spoke up & told the whole staff that they were to talk about ANYTHING other than what they were doing to my body – I suggested Thanksgiving plans and golf scores – as I wanted to know nothing of what was going on! None of this, “Okay now you’ll feel some tugging” for me. Happy to say that they complied & the only thing I heard was that it was a girl & she was healthy.

I was in labor with my son a few months back and I remember the nurses discussing my nail polish while I was pushing.
“OH my what a pretty color. Lydia look at that. Isn’t that the cutest color you have ever seen?!! Liz, what color is that?”
I looked up at her like she was an idiot, looked at my sister and gave her the same look and said “i dont know, maroon?”
LOL. i was in such pain i couldnt even think of the word purple!!!! (without painkillers thanks to my SLOW nurse!!!)
But i remember to this day exactly what they said. Since of course my toes were the nails painted and the world could see it all!!!!
