An update on Dannielynn Stern

Gerlene Gibson, mother of former Bahamian Immigration Minister Shane Gibson, has been Dannielynn Hope Marshall Stern’s caretaker since she was six weeks old. In a new interview Gerlene tells People Magazine that baby Dannielynn is doing well and growing.

On Dannielynn’s development:

She’s rolling over, and she’s trying to pull herself up. She plays peek-a-boo. She likes all her toys. She has a bouncy seat. She has something that looks like a merry-go-round that has toys all around.

On Dannielynn’s sleep schedule:

She’s a good baby who sleeps through the night. She goes to sleep sometime between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. She would sleep right through up to 7 in the morning. Once I give her her bath she sleeps.

Gerlene also says that she believes Dannielynn to be about 10 or 12 lbs. While that may seem small, the National Center for Health Statistics reports that an infant Dannielynn’s age typically weighs anywhere from 12-18lbs. As we previously reported, there were accusations against Anna Nicole that Dannielynn was not getting adequate nourishment and in return was underweight. Gerlene dismissed this claim as "nonsense".

Gerlene also says that she sees Anna Nicole Smith in Dannielynn’s facial features.

Only thing I can see in her is Anna’s smile. She has her mother’s mouth and I think she has her mother’s eyes as well.

When asked what Anna Nicole’s last words were in regards to Dannielynn, Gerlene tells People "to just take care of her."

I love Dannielynn.
It was great to read this update and know that Dannielynn is doing well.

it makes me sick that Howard K. Stern is listed as this child’s father and she has his last name. I watched a special on the life of Anna Nicole and people who worked for her and knew her were quoted as saying that Howard was nothing but a moocher who lived on Anna’s couch and was obsessed with her and the lifestyle she lives…and I believe it! I hope the paternity test is given and it is proven that Danni is Larry Birkhead’s so she can be put in his care and out of Howard’s…he is crazy.

mmm not sure about the weight tho, sounds like she is very teeny
my 5 month old daughter weighs in at 17lbs.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that a 10-12 pound baby needs feeding at some point between 3 p.m. and 7 a.m.? I’m all for not waking a sleeping baby, but 16 hours is a little extreme.

- mamatofive on

I’m glad to hear that Dannielyn is doing well. I hope she is able to grow up having some kind of a normal life. What a sad situation for a sweet little baby girl.

- Judy on

Wow, that’s a lot of hours for a baby to sleep. That’s 16 hours straight if she goes to sleep at 3:00 p.m. like the lady said. Seems strange to me.

- angel on

Umm… She shouldn’t be sleeping that long at night. I hope they are waking her to feed her and not seriously letting her sleep for 14-16 hours at a stretch!

- Jaime on

Isn’t that a lot of sleep- from the afternoon (3pm) to 7 am the next morning?

When I read the comments about Dannielynn’s sleeping habits I took them with a grain of salt. I figured either the woman was exaggerating or that her comments were either misunderstood or mistranslated. I saw this woman on tv and she spoke broken english. I highly doubt that they let the baby sleep all of the time and never feed her.

- Judy on

They speak English in the Bahamas. It’s possible she’s mistaken on the pounds as the nanny is probably used to kilos but the sleep times should be about the same.

That is too long for a normal baby to sleep. That would mean the baby is awake for about 10 hours a day. Huh? Unless there are medical issues we are unaware of, that doesn’t seem right.

- sweetdiva on

I weighed 18 pounds at a year..and my sister weighed 18 pounds at 4 months… Bottom line is all babies are different.

- Yonni on

Yeah, that’s a very long time to let a baby sleep. My first thought was that something was lost in translation! My DD goes to bed at 6:30 and sleeps until 7:00, and that seems like a long time (she is 9 months old). Her weight is definitely on the low side. My DD is a very tiny little girl and at 6 months she weighed in at 14 pounds. I just hope they get the whole paternity thing figured out soon. That poor little baby needs some stability and proper care from whoever is her true father!

- Amy on

seems a bit too much sleep to me, but the weight may be normal. what did she weigh at birth?? Wasn’t she very small, like 5 or 6 pounds?? If so, a weight of 12 pounds would be somewhat normal. As long as she keeps gaining. I think babies triple their birthweight by a year old so she is on track to do that.

As for sleeping, that is a long time to sleep for a 6 month old baby. At 6 months, my daughter was sleeping through the night, but from about 8PM to 6AM. With a 2 hour nap during the afternoon. My son was about the same except he slept from about 8PM to 5AM and took 2 one hour naps during the day.

Bottom line is all babies are different I guess.

- tink1217 on

Im sure the baby does wake up alot during those hours.. No baby or kid can sleep like that.

- Kim on

I can’t even sleep that much.

She says:

“She goes to sleep sometime between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. She WOULD sleep right through up to 7 in the morning.”

She says WOULD. I take that to mean she COULD, possibly sleep that much if the let her. They probably wake her to feed her, etc.

- Traci on

I pray all the time for this dear little baby who will never know her Mom. Its such a shame that HK Stern is capitalizing on any bit of publicity that he can get as long as he holds on to the baby. I do think that Larry Birkhead is the dad and not Stern or I sure hope thats the case. This baby needs love and not money and I hope she can get it. As to her weight she is a petite baby. I was small and so was my daughter but she is 7 now and is just fine. I do question how the baby can sleep from 3pm or 7pm all the way until the morning, thats unusual. My babies slept through the night after breastfeeding before bed at 10-11pm and even then woke up sometimes at 5am to feed again before sleeping until 8am.
God bless you Dannielynn!

- CurlyBrunette on

What????????? I dont think so. That baby cannot be going to bed at 3-5pm and not get up till 7am. That child needs to be fed. 7pm bedtime sounds more reasonable and even that is early for a 6 month old. Everything concerning this baby and her mother is bizzare.

- stacey on

That seems tiny, but a woman I work with has a granddaughter born on the same day as my oldest son, and her granddaughter was 18 lbs at a year, while my son was 32 pounds. They were both good sized babies at birth, she was 8 and my son was 9. They are 21 months now and she is still about 25 lbs. Some babies are just tiny, and baby size has little to do with the adult size.
As for sleeping, that doesn’t seem right, unless Dannielynn is not sleeping/napping AT ALL during the day. Even then I think that her nanny isnt being truthful, or was misunderstood.

- Liza on

Great point Sweetdiva. There might be a problem with changing kilo’s to pounds.

The show I was quoting was one of those “entertainment” shows. The interview was on right after Anna Nicole’s death. Maybe that lady was not really even the nanny. It is very sad to say that I do not know what to believe when it comes to Anna Nicole.

- Judy on

She did say the baby “would” sleep until 7. I get the impression that means she would if she let her.
As for the weight my daughter was 8 pounds at birth and weighed 16 pounds at a year and my doctor said that was fine. All babies are different.

- Kelley on

My daughter was only 12lbs at 6 months old as well. She was 7lbs7oz at birth and just grew slowly. She’s never gone above the 25th percentile for either her height or her weight in her 6 years of being alive. I’m 5’6 and her father was 5’10 so I guess she’s taking after my Chinese Grandmother.

- Lorus on

uuuummmmmmm, that is not normal for a baby to be sleeping that long. She must have been left alone to do some serious crying it out.

- Holly Catherine Slavic on

I have a 8 month old daughter she is 16lbs very small but is growing just fine she sleeps from about 7 or 8PM to 7AM. She just has got to where she will sleep thru the night with out waking up for a bottle. All babies are different I have four children total ages 8yrs, 7yrs, 1 1/2yrs, 8 months so you never know how big or tall they will be until they get that way. I hope Howard is the dad she is use to him and she has been thru so much at a young age. God be with you Dannielynn and Howard!!!!
