Madonna on her children's style

by CBB correspondent Tara:

Madonna was honored with the Elle Style Icon Award at the 10th Annual Elle Style Awards held in London earlier this month. She also happens to be gracing the cover of the magazine in its April issue. Inside Madonna talks about how her children aren’t quite up to par in the style department:

My daughter is going through a phase of wearing jeans that are so tight she can’t bend her knees in them. I have a go at her and say, ‘Can’t you wear something else? You have a closet full of clothes and you wear the same pants every day. And please wear a belt because I don’t want to see your butt crack when you bend over.’

And Rocco doesn’t seem to be doing much better:

My son never wants to take off his Gap army fatigue pants. They both wear the same thing over and over again.

Perhaps little David will be the new style icon in the family. For now it seems the only one who has a sense of style other than the Material Girl herself is her husband Guy Ritchie. Laughs Madonna,

"He’s very obedient in the clothes department!"

the more i hear Madonna speak the more I think she is looney! “style” for her kids??? Geez, let them be kids! Doesn’t Lourdes supposedly have a stylist? My daughter would wear the same things over and over too. Its a normal kid thing to do! and that whole not dating til she is 18 and no TV, etc… she seems so pretentious and snobbish. Educational TV is FINE. And the ocassional movie approved by parents is fine too. Lourdes is going to seriously rebel eventually!

I actually think she sounds just like a regular mom…..its refreshing.

that’s what i was thinking… major rebellion in the making

I also think Madonna has gone too far with the raising of her children. i mean i feel it’s the religion she is into taht gets her to become so strange like. i agree with tink, loudres is just going to rebel one day and leave that red string religion because it has certainly changed her mother throughout the years. what happened to the old madonna. still, her kids are gorgeous but she does crazy talk.

- Nat on

Obedient? You’re talking about a human, not a dog.

- Lorus on

Ha! If I were Lourdes, I’d die of embarrassment hearing my mom talk about my butt crack showing in Elle Magazine!

what “normal” mom is worried about her children having “style”???? Give me a break!! I consider myself a normal mom and I could have cared less about style when my kids were little. As long as they were dressed appropriately in clean clothing that fit them properly I was happy! Now, showing butt crack is a bit much, of course! Talking about it to a magazine is quite another! Poor Lourdes! I do feel sorry for her!

The occassion for the article was Madonna being given a Style Icon Award by Elle. So presumably she’s being asked questions about her kids’ style, not just volunteering information. Hence, it’s the interviewer who’s concerned with the kids’ senses of style, not necessarily Madonna. She’s just answering questions. She sounds like a perfectly normal Mom to me.

I agree, Fynn. It’s a style award, what do you think the questions are going to be like? Evidently now the having a stylist thing is just tabloid talk. There loads of people (including me) who complain about people showing their buttcracks, especially when it’s children, and Madonna of all people is telling her daughter to put a belt on and she’s pretentious? It’s not like Lourdes going to read this interview and shave her head to piss her off or anything like that. Isn’t that what mums do anyway, tell embarrassing stories about their kids? My mum sure has a stock of those about me. Madonna is just being a regular mum.

I went through the same clothing every day phase and I can’t even tell you how many times my mum complain and told me to change.

And finally, people need to stop blaming someone’s religion for every little thing. Demi Moore’s been one even before Madonna and her kids are fine. If it’s Kabbalah’s fault, they’d be wearing only white clothes.

stephanie, if you were referring to the “pretentious” comment it was mine, but NOT about the wearing a belt and showing buttcrack thing. It was more about her no TV and no dating til 18 and all her other “ideas” about parenting. She can do what she wants, of course. I just think her children will rebel eventually.

I guess I just find it so ironic that Madonna (tight cloths wearing sex symbol of the 80′s) is talking about her daughter’s jeans are way too tight and she can’t date till she is 18!! I guess we all grow up at some point and forget what it was like as a child (teen)……

- gabbie13 on

Madonna has changed so much thats its ridiculous. she wants to convert her poor children into a priest and nun. children are they way they should be and accept the way they dress, they’re young.

- Diana on

i impose the same things for my kids! very minimum tv and my daughter will not date till she is 18 ,,,,everyone is critisising her for being a caring mom,,at least she cares and concentrates on them… stop being haters
