Director Francis Ford Coppola on his mentor: his daughter Sofia
Film Director Francis Ford Coppola is a legend within the entertainment community for his well known works including, The Godfather sequels and Apocalypse Now, and he is the idol of many up and coming filmmakers. However, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly about his return behind the camera, Francis said his idol and mentor is his own daughter, fellow director Sofia Coppola.
I finally took a cue from my daughter, who went off and made [Lost in Translation] quickly and successfully. I thought I could do another project the same way.
Sofia’s films include Marie Antoinette, The Virgin Suicides, and the Oscar winner Lost in Translation. Francis says he can’t help but watch Sofia’s films as a filmmaker and as her father.
I’m totally proud of Sofia because she makes films so uncompromisingly. I personally feel that Marie Antoinette was one of the most original films of the year. But to watch it come out and see it attacked… She’s very copacetic about it, and I, as her father, am very annoyed…. It’s the third film in a very impressive young career. Fortunately, she’s made of steel.
In other news, he also said that Sofia and the family will gather in the next month for the baptism of her 3-month-old daughter with beau Thomas Mars, Romy, which is when he will show her his latest project.
