Is the Orbit the new Bugaboo?

by CBB Gear/Fashion correspondent Patty of Baby Chic 101

Orbit_mocha_1Is the Orbit the new Bugaboo?  We’ll have to see. But so far, Orbit Baby Stroller Systemsare beginning to pop up all over Hollywood.  Maggie Gyllenhaal has one for her daughter Ramona and was seen pushing it last month.Heidi Klum took her new son Johan out for a stroll in the park in amocha version not long after his birth. Elvis Costello and Diana Krall decided toskip a double stroller for their twin sons and buy two Orbits. And Gwen Stefani has one too.

Thevery modern looking stroller/car seat combo is sold together, with atoddler seat and different color cushions sold separately. Orbit isalso introducing a bassinet and a bouncer next month. The bouncerallows the bassinet, car seat, and the toddler seat to connect to thetop of it. A toddler car seat that will also fit on the stroller, an industry first, is planned for later this year.

One of the key features of the Orbit is its 360 degree rotation, allowing your child to face forward, backward or sideways.  It also makes putting the car seat in the car a lot easier as you can put it in facing you and then turn it to the back for the car ride.

Note: Stay tuned for Danielle’s review next month.

I have to ask just this one question about this whole system… why?

At first I thought that it came with a seat as well, like the bugaboo… but apparently not. I’ll give you the bugaboo, okay, it’s got an adapter, a seat and bassinet… But who honestly can justify spending $900 on an infant seat and base that a child will outgrow within the first year? And spending more money to add a toddler seat (can an infant even use the seat?) seems absurd!

And besides, as a site that promotes the healthiest and safest decisions for our children (pointing out that umbrella strollers aren’t safe for infants, that they should be in flat inclines, that breast is best, that bottles should be ditched after age 1, etc…) And don’t get me wrong I support all of this whole heartedly… I think it’s important to point out that while it’s okay for infants to be in their infant seats for short errands, car rides, etc… travel systems aren’t best. $900 or not a child should not be strapped in their infant seat for long walks in NYC… it’s no better than leaving them in a bouncy chair or swing all day long. It’s not good for them.

I just think that’s important to add…

my sister has the orbit system for her two week old daughter and all i can say is one thing about it “amazing” it’s definately worth the money and it is soooooo simple to open and close the stroller, plus with the “paparazzi” shade she doesn’t even need a snow suit for her, it completely blocks the wind and cold air OUT.

I really want an orbit, but can’t seem to find a retailer in Australia….
