CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta welcomes a second daughter
CNN chief medical correspondent and neurosurgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta and his wife welcomed their second daughter in late January. She joins their 19 month old daughter, Sage Ayla.
Several readers have written in saying they heard his wife had triplets. We know that she did not. On his CNN blog, Sanjay clearly states "my wife delivered our second child. Up to the point of the delivery, wehad no idea whether the baby was a boy or a girl. She is definitely agirl. Very pretty, very mild mannered. Beautiful. We could not behappier."
We don’t know further details but he did say that they had a birth plan and that "everything went pretty much as we anticipated."
A birth plan is a written statement of your preferences for how you would like your labor, delivery and immediate aftercare to go. Of course, it doesn’t mean it will go according to your desires, but it gives the medical staff an idea of what you would like. Things that are often included are positions for pushing, no episiotomy versus episiotomy, cord cutting, where the baby goes at birth (e.g. you, your partner, the warmer), breastfeeding vs. formula feeding, and what happens with the placenta. A birth plan is by no means necessary. It is chiefly a tool for working out what you and your partner want and you should discuss everything with your obstetrician at your prenatal visits.
