Stella McCartney not about to slow down

by CBB correspondent Joyce:

Stella McCartney just welcomed her second child in December, daughter Bailey Linda Olwyn, with her husband, publisher Alasdhair Willis, but she has no plans to slow down her designing career or to put her other pursuits on hold.

In an interview with The Age, shortly before she gave birth, Stella says she was offended by rumors saying she would leave fashion when she got pregnant, remarking, "Oh, how f—ing male chauvinistic is that?"

She insists she never had any intention of quitting and has since become more efficient learning to juggle both worlds. But it’s still not easy.

Well, I’m going to have a breakdown on Wednesday, I’ve decided. It’s harder work than having a job. It’s affected me in that I prioritise my family, but I always have. It’s affected me in that I leave the office – I have to be home at 5:30 now in the evenings to relieve my nanny.

The 35-year-old, who calls herself a "worker," says she enjoys her job, which is why she didn’t go on maternity leave even as she neared the end of her pregnancy with Bailey.

I would have spent my last three months of pregnancy in bed, you know, and nurturing my child and talking to it every day because I’m an animal, really, and I’m pregnant. So I’d rather be in the country connecting with that, but I also enjoy my job. I do enjoy it.

And now her children inspire her work – the couple also has a son, Miller Alasdhair James, who will turn 2 on Feb. 25. For her perfume, Stella says she wanted to create a line with love and emotion behind them as she felt too many fragrances are cheap and offensive, so there were no better people to look to than her children.

I worked effing hard on creating a perfume that I think is a beautiful perfume, that I think your mum will wear, that you’ll wear and that, I don’t know if you have kids, but if you have kids, they’ll wear it one day and it will remind them of you. To me, that’s what perfume is. It’s directly linked to your memory gland and it’s important.

Stella and Alasdhair have been married for three years. Bailey was born on Dec. 8, which was the 26th anniversary of the death of John Lennon.

I really admire Stella – She’s done really well, creating such wonderful clothes and everything. I also love the fact that she is against animal cruelty (Like her mother was) – It so great to see someone famous with such values like that.

Stella is launching a collection of clothing for Target in Australia in March. I just saw some of the gorgeous items that will be available at the Aussie Vogue Magazine forum. Wish I was going to Australia for a holiday.
