Calista Flockhart has shied away from Hollywood the past few years after Ally McBeal ended only to return this fall in the ABC drama Brothers & Sisters. Her sabbatical was for a good reason – to be a stay-at-home mom to her son, Liam, 6.
Calista tells Australia’s Herald Sun that she consciously chose put her career on the backburner the last four years and didn’t expect to return to acting so soon.
Full-time motherhood was a personal choice I made. If this script hadn’t come along, I probably still wouldn’t be working. But the way it turned out, my son started kindergarten, so this year I was going to start thinking about going back to work. It just happened a little sooner than I expected.
She had a rule though – she would not accept a role if it didn’t film in Los Angeles because of the difficulty of traveling with a child.
Now that the series is a hit and has been picked up for a full season, Calista is still trying to reacquaint herself with the early call times and long 12-hour days. The transition, she says, is rough.
Emotionally I had a hard time. I find it hard to juggle. I’m constantly on the phone planning play dates for Liam, and I’m racing to get home for dinner and to put him to bed. It’s hard for any working mum. You try to find balance and sometimes you’re successful and sometimes you’re not. You just do the best you can.
The 42-year-old, who’s been dating Harrison Ford, 62, since 2002, also explains – or tries to – how much being a parent has affected her.
Oh, gosh, it’s hard for me to articulate that, but having a child gives you empathy. I think I’m much more tolerant and not probably so focused on myself.
Calista adopted Liam in January 2001.
