Ani DiFranco welcomes a daughter

A CBB Reader emailed us that she learned that her midwife delivered Ani DiFranco‘s baby this weekend. Ani gave birth to a little girl that she named Petah Lucia, who weighed 7 lbs, 8 oz, in her Buffalo home on January 20th.  Both mama and baby are doing well.  This was confirmed on Ani’s official website.

Dad is music producer Mike Napolitano.

Petah may be for the western Israeli city of Petah Tikva, which means the Opening of Hope.

I am so excited about this birth. Ani is a powerful force in the feminist movement and her songs have changed the lives of many… so many blessings and well wishes to this family.

That is awesome! I love Ani’s music and her taste in birthing.

Oh I am so happy for her. I’ve been on pins and needles for this day to come.
I was lucky enough to see Ani twice in 06 before she went on leave. I wish all the best to Mom and baby. What a whole new exciting dimension this will be in her life~

The name Petah could’ve come from the artist Petah Coyne. Just a thought.
Also, we should mention the father in this equation is Mike Napolitano, her producer/boyfriend.

hmm it seems my comment was filed under someone else’s name (meg) Here is MY original comment:

Petah is also Native American/Blackfoot for “Golden Eagle”. Just a thought-is Ani perhaps part Native American?

Hi Chloe – Your comment is there, posted as you saying it – the comment appears above the name of the person who wrote it, not below, I think you may be reading it as the name first, and then the comment, but it’s actually the other way around! Hope that helps.

ooops! thank you! sorry about that!

I love Ani, but why would you name your female child “hole”? That’s really asking for trouble.

From the wording of this article, it seems like the midwife did all the work…anyone ever consider that ANI delivered her baby, and the midwife caught it?

- Angela on

Ani’s mother is Jewish (at least half) and her father was Italian. (That’s for the person who wondered if Ani was part Native American). She, herself, is not religious, as far as I can tell. She sings about her parents being immigrants; they were from Italy.
