Will Smith says Jaden is an empath

01/14/2007 at 07:56 PM ET

Actor Will Smith says he and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith have to limit what their actor son Jaden watches due to his sensitivity to the things going on around him.

"We call him empath. He has the power to empathise with situations he has no knowledge of beforehand. We can explain it to him, he will ask a question and he will take it in. If you explain it clearly he is emotionally transported to that space. We have to be careful with the stories we let him hear. He doesn’t watch TV too much anyway, but the news can ruin his whole month."

Maybe that’s why the 8-year-old is such a good actor in his hit film with Will, The Pursuit of Happyness.

My 10 year old daughter is the same way. We call her an “old soul”, as if she has grown wise from living a previous life.

My daughter is the same way. She’s extremely empathetic. I knew from an early age that she was really sensitive. When she was 3 years old I let her watch the movie ‘Land before time’ while I was doing some chores. I came back into the room and she was rubbing tears away from her eyes. I asked her what was wrong and she said her eyes were getting all wet because the baby dinosaur’s mother had died!! I couldn’t believe it. Up until just recently (she’s 6) she used to cry whenever another child was crying because they were hurt.

Oh my goodness this is just like my son. We went to see “Forrest Gump” when it came out as a family. My son was 9 at the time and when Forrest “ran” out of his leg braces, my son had tears streaming down his face!! He and I are soooo much alike. We have been watching tv and a particular commercial will come on and I’ll look over at him and he’s all welled up in tears… and of course I’M crying also!! He’s 21 now and still the same. Definetly wears his heart on his sleeve.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
