Rumor: Julia Roberts buys two cribs – more twins on the way?

01/10/2007 at 10:20 AM ET

Cherubinicrib2Update:
Some CBB readers are talking about why Julia would be buying more baby gear when she already has stuff from Hazel and Phinnaeus.  For most of us, we use handmedowns from our first babies due to financial limitations.  BUT if you had money to burn, would you want to buy new stuff for new babies?

Originally posted January 9, 2007:
According to the New York Daily News, Julia Roberts may be pregnant with another set of twins!  They cite recent purchases at Beverly Hills’ go-to baby boutique, Petit Tresor, where Julia bought two Bonne Nuit Cherubini cribs ($2,200) and changing tables ($2,450)- just like Diddy and Kim Porter‘s twin girls D’Lila and Jessie have, two gliders, two Moses baskets, and lots of Kaloo toys, totalling over $10,000.

One of our readers suggested that the reason Julia bought two of each is not that she and husband Danny Moder are expecting twins but because she wants to have identical nurseries in their Taos and Malibu homes.

It was widely speculated that Julia and Danny used IVF to conceive their two year old twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, but Julia has never confirmed or denied it.  IVF pregnancies frequently result in multiples (though not all of the fetuses survive sometimes).   We may never know if this new pregnancy is the result of IVF.  However, after a woman gives birth vaginally, her cervix is wider and sperm travels better so it’s easier to conceive naturally so she may not have even used IVF.  (Hazel and Phinnaeus were delivered via c-section, though.)  Also, the fertility issue is not always on the woman’s end- the man is often the one with a sperm count/mobility/etc. issue.

another set of twins would be so exciting, but i think a likelier reason is that she is doing what she did the last time around. i remember reading that she created identical nurseries in her two homes, so that hazel and finn would feel stable. i bet she wants the same for this babe!

Jane on

can you say, “2nd round of IVF?”

jenny on

Doesn’t Julia have multiple residences? I think it’s more likely that she’s doubling up on nursery items to furnish two houses for one baby than having twins again! Wasn’t it Julia who set up identical nurseries for Hazel & Finn in Malibu and New Mexico so the babies wouldn’t feel the effects of moving around so much? Or am I confusing that with a different celebrity??

susan on

Fantastico JULIA!

K&M on

With all the rumors that she used IVF with her first twins, one wonders if this might be an FET (frozen embryo transfer.) Will be curious to see if this is another set of twins…

madison on

It’s a little strange how many of of these rumors mention Petit Tresor in it somewhere (i.e. Nicole Kidman’s most recent pregnancy rumor). I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a PR person who drops these stories to the press…….

mars on

If this rumor is true… it would be soooo cute!

Christina on

I think there is a cashier at Petit Tresor who is making a little change on the side, eh?

Either explanation is feasibile. They do have another home in New Mexico (Taos, is it?) but they could be having another set of twins. Joan Lunden has two sets of twins (via surrogate)with her 2nd husband and they’re 18 or 19 months apart in age.

I’m curious as to why it seems that they’re not reusing some of the items from their older children? Phinneaus and Hazel no longer fit into their Moses baskets at this age, and likely aren’t fitting onto their changing tables, either. Plus, by this time, a lot of kids their age (they’ll be 2 1/2 or so when she gives birth again) are out of their crib and into a toddler or twin bed. So, I’m not sure why they’re buying new sets of newborn baby things. Particularly if they’re just having one baby this time, they’ve already got two of everything from last time.

jessica bird on

Why would she need all that stuff? Wouldn’t she already have changing tables, moses baskets, etc?

I read on a magazine that Julia said that she’d like to have a couple of twins again (a boy and a girl), and that she’d choose the sexes, like she had done before with Hazel and Finn. If it’s true or not I don’t know, but I see no reason for a person to double up on nursery items to furnish two houses. If I had two houses to furnish and a good bank account I’d love to have different nursery items. Well, we gotta wait and see.

I thought I’d read or heard somewhere that this pregnancy was a lovely surprise for Julia and Danny–like Brooke Sheilds’ second pregnancy–so not IVF this time. I’m guessing it’s the duplicate nursery thing again.

jennifer on

She has said to people magazine that there is only one baby in there.

How open a woman’s cervix is doesn’t determine whether or not she’s going to have twins. She either has to release multiple eggs and then one of the 1 million sperm (on average) that reach the uterus will inseminate them, or the one egg can split into two creating identical twins.
I remember Julia saying before that twins run in her family so she could have conceived Hazel & Phinn naturally.

Christina on

Sometimes the reason people are having trouble conceiving has nothing to do with the width of the woman’s cervical opening. Giving birth vaginally does not always mean it will be easier to conceive again, as the blurb implies.

Many people struggle with secondary infertility, in which they’ve conceived easily one time and have difficulty conceiving again, and many people struggle with both primary infertility and secondary infertility. Plus, there are often male factors involved, as well, infertility is not the sole domain of the woman.

Heavenly_hibiscus on

It’s prob ‘Petit Tresor’ themselves dropping stories! j/k

Julia is fantastic. Another set of twins would make for a busy household.

Funny how a lot of celebs seem to buy all-new EVERYTHING the second time around. In my family everything is passed down.

fumar on

I remember reading that she wanted four kids, and she thought that a second set of twins would be perfect for her. I also thought how unlikely that would be, but if she’s using IVF I suppose it’s more likely.

yogadaisy on

Well, maybe the first moses baskets (cribs, gliders) were used quite a bit and show signs of wear. A diaper leaked, some spit up, wear from being outside or played with by the toddlers, etc. It’s nice to have nice, new, clean things for a new baby. Remember we are talking about a VERY rich woman, here.

melissa on

i hope that whatever she has.. is happy and healthy.. she deserves the happiness in her life… blessings to her and her family!!

As for the new stuff.. heck for our last one( he was the 4th) I bought lots and lots of new stuff for him.. crib..etc.. i like to be able to put them into new stuff!!

Alicia on

I thik until the rummors are confirmed by Julia herself I am gogin to stick with Jenny and the idea that maybe she is furnishing 2 houses. I am so excited for her and that would be crazy if she did have twins again!!

Emily G on

Congrats to Julia and Danny!! She is one of my favorites so I am super excited for her! As we all know with the super rich Hollywood stars… they all have more than one home, so one crib may be for their Taos, NM home and one for their LA home… no need to assume twins. But boy, would she have her hands full if that did happen! Hope everything goes well for her. She is such a sweet girl…

jennifer on

You all keep saying she had IVF she said she didnt. Julia and Danny have twins in their family and it is a fact that once you get a certain age chance of having twins goes up.

Lauren on

I think it’s great that Julia is buying new cribs, equipment, etc. for the baby even though he/she could have just hand-me-downs. Practically all of my ten-month-old godson’s clothing, furniture, and toys previously belonged to his older brother, and whenever his brother receives a toy, his mother says, “Christopher, this will be yours one day” (to my godson). I think some hand-me-downs are nice, but I feel bad that the kid has practically nothing of his own. Babies are individuals, and I believe they should be treated as such. This means having their own set of belongings that they can identify with.

Lissette on

As soon as I heard she was pregnant again, I immediately thought it was an IVF baby because I think the twins were-not that that matters. As far as her buying more things, if I had the money to burn, I’d do it too. Styles change-why not?

Lissette on

oh and as for Petit Tresor, if I were a celebrity I wouldnt shop there. They dont seem to value people’s privacy. They’re always boasting about everyone that shops/registers at their store.

Ginger on

I don’t think it’s a matter of *throwing money around*. Anyone notice that she has a couple of TOTS? Perhaps she’s keeping them in their cribs until they’re 3.

This is not unheard of within my mother’s circle; most full-time moms struggle with naps and the Two Year Old Child. I know I did, once I converted my daughter’s crib to junior bed at two. The naps went out the window, and I was driving my daughter around town just so she would continue some sort of nap.

tink1217 on

my son slept in his crib til he was almost 4, he fit so why not?? besides, we tried him in a toddler bed and he wouldn’t stay in it! She is probably still using Hazel and Phinneas’ cribs and wants to furnish both homes for the new baby!

I don’t think I would register or shop at Petit Tresor if I was a celeb either! They have loose lips!

melanie on

I kept the kids in the baby crib until they were old enough to try to climb out (sometimes successfully). They were about 2 years old. This was also right around the same time they figured out how to unbuckle their carseats among other things. :)

Littlemindy on

Maybe she gave the old baby stuff away to a charity or family member. If this new baby really was unexpected, I can see them being caught off guard and having to fully refurnish.

Erika on

I have no idea if she had IVF or not, but it is possible to have twins twice, with no fertility at all. My brother and his wife have identical twin boys that are 8 years old and fraternal twin girls that will be 5 in june. They had absolutely NO fertility treatments at all and definitely no IVF. It just happened that way. It is possible!
