Maggie Gyllenhaal's struggle with the paparazzi since the birth of Ramona

by CBB correspondent Katherine

Maggie Gyllenhaal is surprised by how much attention she has been getting since her pregnancy and birth of her daughter, Ramona Sarsgaard, 3 months. She shares that there are always photographers waiting outside of her house to steal a photo of her, fiancé and father of Ramona, Peter Sarsgaard, and Ramona. One photographer went so far as to call the fire department so the family would evacuate their home – twice.

Maggie, who spent most of her labor at home, says that when she entered transition (when the cervix dilates from 8 to 10 centimeters, contractions are 2 to 3 minutes apart and last about 1 minute -  many say it is the toughest stage of labor for them) and left for the hospital, 30 photographers were waiting outside to snap photos of her during this trying time.

She says, "We had a reporter buzz our buzzer over and over again for an hour when she was 5 days old…And the truth is, I don’t care at all if they take pictures of me anymore, but I do not want them to come in droves and photograph my daughter. There are so many things going on in the world that are so much worse, and I’m so lucky in so many ways, so I don’t want to complain too much about it. It’s just that I don’t think most people know what goes into getting those pictures that are in those magazines."

Aside from the paparazzi’s scary behavior, Maggie is content with not having to work in any movies for a while. She explains, "I’m going to wait and see what I feel capable of doing. When Ramona was a month old, I never would have done this [interview]. It just sort of emerges, what feels comfortable."

The paps behaviour is ridiculous!

- Heavenly_hibiscus on

how scary for them! I cannot believe the lengths the paparazzi will go to in these circumstances!

I hope we don’t see any photos of Ramona on this site (or anywhere) then. Also, when a late night talkshow host said to Ben Affleck “I’ve seen from the papers that your daughter is very cute” that he replied, “I wish you didn’t know that, but thank you.” It seems that if the policy is to not publish photos on this site that the parents don’t want taken that then we shouldn’t see any of these two children, even if their parents are too tired to battle with covering them with a blanket.

The world has changed….. there is “nothing” that the “paps” “slept with” THAT MADE ME WANT TO DROP THE PRICE.. … Add THAT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A TERRIBLEG! I’ will do what I can

I want a full=blown US goin on… Let’s close if you are “ready #……

It’s so crazy what the papparazzi will do to get a simple picture. It’s really quite sad and scary. It’s like these celebrities must hole up in their home in order to have any privacy!

I absolutly love Maggie, and I can’t believe how ridiculous those photographers are being — having them evacuate their apartment?! TWICE? That’s insane. There need to be limits, especially when children are involved. The kids didn’t ask for that, even though their mums and dads might have (simply for being famous in their own rights..). I can certainly understand why Angelina went to Namibia!

“We had a reporter buzz our buzzer over and over again for an hour when she was 5 days old…”

oh wow, isn’t this against the law? just because they have cameras does not mean that they have the right to practically stalk her. these guys need to be put into jail. or have someone pester their families.
it’s ridiculous how far things have gone over the past years and how the limits of civilized behaviour have been passed.
Lady Di’s death should have triggered a law against the paps. :(

Maggie is so precious and has such a good head on her shoulders. She is so well-spoken and level-headed, even when it is obvious that the intrusiveness of the paps are taking a toll on her and her family. I love seeing celeb and celeb baby pictures as much as the next person; but, not at the expense of a family or baby’s safety, security and peace of mind! The behavior she described by the paps is shameful!

I just noticed the comment about “transition” in this post and just wanted to clarify what it is. As a Labor and Delivery nurse I feel this is valuable information for the public to have the correct definition of.
Transition is actually…
When the cervix dilates from 8 to 10 centimeters (called the Transition Phase), contractions are 2 to 3 minutes apart and last about 1 minute. You may feel pressure on your rectum and your backache may feel worse. Bleeding from your vagina will be heavier.

This is disgusting! If Maggie and Peter were fame whores I wouldn’t feel sorry for them, but they are private people and have never courted the press. It’s not like Maggie is running around Club Pure with no underwear on, she’s just a normal working actor who doesn’t even live in Hollywood. It’s totally unfair to be stalked like this.

I feel for them, I think the constant hounding is unacceptable. I have to admit though, I can’t help but feel a bit guilty. I’m a celeb junkie, and as such, I know I play a role in this insanity. Heck, most of the photos posted on CBB are courtesy of the paparazzo. Here we are feeling outrage towards the very people that take the pictures that we so enjoy. At the end of the day, if there wasn’t such a demand for it, the paps wouldn’t go to such extreme measures to get the pics. There’s an awful lot of money to made in this industry, and each time we buy a celeb magazine or visit a site like this, we help feed into it. I do think it’s the price of fame, but at the same time, there should be some privacy laws put in place to protect celebrities, especially their children!

- gargoylegurl on

I really respect and admire Maggie, especially for the way she appears to remain calm and civil when speaking about the paparazzi even though they’ve obviously bothered her and her family. I think it’s despicable some of the things she talked about that they’ve done, they behave like savages sometimes!

- Sabina on

After reading this interview, I must say a big kudos to CBB for not publishing pictures of celb babies that their parents don’t want taken. Sorry, this doesn’t sound too articulate, mom of a 3 m/o here!

- legalmama on

I agree that the paps go WAY too far–I really feel for Maggie!

I also want give her serious props for birthing her first child naturally. I love how she stayed home during her labor (there is nothing like laboring at home) and only went in toward the very end. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to walk outside with the paps there during transition and make her way to the hospital.

What a nice story of strength and humility in light of Dayna Devon calling her average-sized baby “not a baby, a linebacker” and than trying to blame size for her c-section.

- yogadaisy on

I wonder if people who are very forthcoming with their babies (i.e. Gwen Stefani) are bullied like this for the next “big shot”.

I think it’s dispicable that people would go to such lengths to get a photo of a 5 day old baby. I still am interested, however, in what the paps are like with Gwen who has King everywhere. I wonder if they are more laid back with her because he’s not really a “hot comodity”?!?!

- Brandi on

i think celebs “hiding” their child is nice but it can backfire on them. just show ‘em the kid and they’ll go away(usually). i don’t live in the U.S. so I don’t know much about maggie, so I had no idea she was that popular lol.

Tori and Dean are gonna have fun(not)come the end of March…

- ang on

I disagree with the comment above about them being “private people and have never courted the press.” When you choose to become a celebrity, you are putting yourself in the public eye whether you want to or not. This is nothing new, so she had to know that the media would be interested in her child. It’s part of being a celebrity, something she signed herself up for.

However, I am surprised at the intensity of the media circling her home … she is not that hot of a commodity as opposed to say, Britney, whose second child we still have not seen.

I think the paparazzi probably is a lot more chill with celebs like Gwen Stefani, and Brangelina because they let them get the snap they want and then they go about their way. Playing hard-to-get is only going to fuel the fire. That’s why we see pics of Maddox, Zahara and Kingston frequently without being blurred bad shots from some photog chasing them down the street.

- editorjax on

editorjax – I just meant that some celebrities “use” the press to promote their own celebrity. Maggie and Peter only do interviews to promote films they are in and only attend red carpet events for awards shows or movies they are in. They don’t show up at nightclubs to have their picture taken and they don’t show up at “the opening of an envelope” like Lindsay and Paris. They are working actors.

Of course they are celebs and public people, but I think they don’t deserve this kind of stalking because they are so low key. For instance, I think Britney and Katie Holmes deserve everything things they get. They both use the press for PR (to make themselves more famous) and so if it backfires on them, they deserve what they get IMO.
