Maggie Gyllenhaal's struggle with the paparazzi since the birth of Ramona
by CBB correspondent Katherine
Maggie Gyllenhaal is surprised by how much attention she has been getting since her pregnancy and birth of her daughter, Ramona Sarsgaard, 3 months. She shares that there are always photographers waiting outside of her house to steal a photo of her, fiancé and father of Ramona, Peter Sarsgaard, and Ramona. One photographer went so far as to call the fire department so the family would evacuate their home – twice.
Maggie, who spent most of her labor at home, says that when she entered transition (when the cervix dilates from 8 to 10 centimeters, contractions are 2 to 3 minutes apart and last about 1 minute - many say it is the toughest stage of labor for them) and left for the hospital, 30 photographers were waiting outside to snap photos of her during this trying time.
She says, "We had a reporter buzz our buzzer over and over again for an hour when she was 5 days old…And the truth is, I don’t care at all if they take pictures of me anymore, but I do not want them to come in droves and photograph my daughter. There are so many things going on in the world that are so much worse, and I’m so lucky in so many ways, so I don’t want to complain too much about it. It’s just that I don’t think most people know what goes into getting those pictures that are in those magazines."
Aside from the paparazzi’s scary behavior, Maggie is content with not having to work in any movies for a while. She explains, "I’m going to wait and see what I feel capable of doing. When Ramona was a month old, I never would have done this [interview]. It just sort of emerges, what feels comfortable."
