Tammy Faye Messner's son talks about his mom's battle with cancer

Tammy Faye Messner is perhaps best known as Tammy Faye Bakker, the former wife of Jim Bakker, the television evangelist who faced criminal charges (and was later convicted).  Her personal battles that followed have been equally trying. In 2004, she was diagnosed with lung cancer, which is now in Stage 4.

Her son Jay (a minister in his own right) recently appeared on Larry King Live to talk about how the family is coping.  He said that his sister Tammy Sue serves as her round-the-clock nurse, and even though it is extremely hard to see their mother in this condition, he said they are constantly inspired by her spirit.

"She’s a fighter. She is 68 pounds of pure steel, you know. I mean, it’s just like she is just amazing. And I think what keeps her going is her faith in God and her love for shopping. You know, we have to go to Target every other day… It nearly breaks my heart when I hug her. I can feel her bones. But she’s beautiful. My mom is so beautiful to me. And, you know, people have said so many mean things about my mother in the past… She  is just a wonderful, beautiful woman. And she has encouraged me not to give up."

In a recent entry on her web site, Tammy also talked about her health – and how much she is grateful for her family.

"I’m doin’ ok. Still have some good days and some not so good… Thanksgiving was uneventful this year – everybody behaved themselves. Had a wonderful time with my kids and grandkids. It is such a blessing to have my family here to spend time with me."

We wish Tammy and her family the very best.

A sad story. Jay’s show on the Sundance Channel is excellent — One Punk Under God.

Is Tammy Faye still hanging in there as of today? I hope the best for all of them, regardless of past scandals.

I firmly believe that America needs a spiritual awakening. When we turn back to the one that has given us the ability to breath and have our being, I believe that we will begin to see a turn around in some of the chaos in America today. You may be reading this and wondering “What does this have to do with Tammy? Well, Tammy Faye Messner has a powerful testimony. Every time you see her, she is giving God praise. Despite her near physical death experience, she holds onto the promise that she will be with Jesus one day and does not rule out the fact that Jesus is a healer and a deliverer of all things. To me, this is powerful. I want you to look past her make up or her eye lashes and see what is happening in the spiritual realm.

As I contemplated opening up this web site, a powerful revelation came to me. If Tammy Faye lives physically, she will have an even greater testimony and this will be a powerful tool that God can use to show forth his miraculous and gracious healing powers. I am not saying that her testimony will not be equally powerful if she enters into eternal rest with the Lord, but my point is that if she lives and recovers, God will be glorified in a very powerful way to show that his grace endureth forever. America needs a sign from God. These are the last days and I believe that many people are drawn away and oppressed by so many things today that the only way we are going to turn the ills of this world around is through God. I am asking all that know and have experienced the power and demonstration of the Spirit of God to join with me in prayer for our sister. This fight is not all about Tammy Faye, but it goes deeper. This is a fight against sickness and all of the devices that come to rob us of our quality of life. Let’s prove that through Prayer, God is ultimately in charge and determines the destiny of everyone. Not sickness, but God’s Word.
