Elizabeth Vargas controversial photoshopped breastfeeding picture

11/13/2006 at 11:29 PM ET

Marie Claire magazine, in a controversial move, has published a photoshopped picture of news anchor for ABC, Elizabeth Vargas breastfeeding a baby (which is suppose to be her son, Samuel Wyatt who was born August 16th) at the anchor desk. Vargas willingly answered questions for the magazine but did not agree to the photo that was published. Source close to Elizabeth said she was disappointed but took it with a sense of humor; "Elizabeth was more than happy to sit for the interview but was disturbed that the magazine would set aside basic journalistic standards to photoshop her head onto a fake image. Vargas did joke that her real baby is cuter, that she is proud to breastfeed her newborn but wouldn’t do it at the anchor desk and she wouldn’t be caught dead in that ugly gold blouse."

Wow, I think it’s completely tasteless that they would do this, and especially without her consent. It is one thing if a woman decides to share photos of her feeding her baby with the world, but an entirely different thing if someone essentially mocks her and breastfeeding by posting a fake photo without her consent. Shame on Marie Claire.

Forget about faking a breastfeeding photo- they shouldn’t fake ANY photo (without permission).

I can’t believe that. It’s great that she is taking it in stride. I would be very upset, if I had already told the magazine no.

I guess this was intended as an empowering image but Vargas appears to be nursing a doll…which simply makes it look as if they’re engaging in buffoonery. It’s Marie Claire gone Mad Magazine, only it’s not funny.

I definitely think it’s not cool to photoshop her head onto another picture without her consent. I also think it’s a weird image of breastfeeding, because all the nursing moms I know unbutton their blouses from the bottom to show less skin if they are nursing outside the house. The picture makes it seem like you have to disrobe to nurse a baby, but you really don’t!

“Vargas did joke that her real baby is cuter”

I’d assume so since that is obviously a doll in the picture.

Wow that was wrong of the magazine to do so. It’s nice she didn’t take it seriously but that just gives the magazine reason to do it again to someone else. Not cool!
