Deacon Phillippe's middle name revealed

11/08/2006 at 08:43 PM ET

Every once in awhile, we get an email in our tips box asking what 3 year old Deacon Phillippe’s middle name is. Truth is, we didn’t know – his middle name was never announced when he was born. However, since Reese filed divorce paperwork today, the minor children are listed, and Deacon’s full name is revealed to be Deacon Reese Phillippe. Reese is actually the actresses’ own middle name as well – her full name is Laurajeanne Reese Witherspoon. Reese is her mother’s maiden name.

It is funny that Deacon’s middle name is listed, but either Ava doesn’t have one, or it is not listed. Does anyone know if Ava has a middle name? I am sad for this couple – they seemed so grounded.

Sarah, CBB News Editor on

Ava is Ava Elizabeth Phillippe.

Annie on

Did you also notice that Ava’s birthday is 9/9/99? Wild!

Roise on

I read in an interview that Reese is also the maiden name of Betty Witherspoon, Reese’s mother.

I hate to be nit-picky…But Reese’s “real” name is actually spelled Laurajeanne. It is all one big ol’ word there.

It is kind of odd that Deacon’s middle name is on the papers but Ava’s isn’t. Wonder if her middle name is something they gave her themselves but didn’t put it on the birth certificate for whatever reason.

I’ve always wondered what Deacon’s middle name is, but now, I find it interesting that Ava’s middle name isn’t listed on the documents, while his is.

I’d never heard that was Reese’s real first name! I think she made a wise choice going by Reese. :P

It’s nice to see that she put down joint custody but for her to have physical custody. It shows respect and I doubt that this divorce will get ugly.

Ava’s middle name is Elizabeth after Reese’s mother, Elizabeth, nicknamed Betty. Reese IS Betty’s maiden name, so they have named each of their children after a family member, both first and middle names. Deacon is also the name of a cousin or some other family member of Ryan’s (who is also a somewhat famous baseball player, I think) and Ava is Ryan’s grandmother’s name, as well as the name of his favorite actress, Ava Gardner. There is much ado right now over the actual correct pronunciation of the last name Phillippe. I’ve ALWAYS heard it pronounced phil-a-PEE (emphasis on the PEE with a long e sound), but have just recently been “corrected” that it’s phil-LEEP by one person and phil-LEEP-ay by another. Can someone clear this up once and for all?

Deacon is very handsome. But then with genes like that he would be!

Sarah, CBB News Editor on

It’s Phil-a-pee!

In an interview I read once in a magazine (Elle, Vanity Fair, one of those) they stated that the pronunciation was like: Fill a pea. It stuck out in my memory, but I do’nt know if that came from Reese or Ryan themselves or if the mag was just stating it as they see it should be.

Roise on

I worked on a movie with Ryan. Sarah and Virginia are right, it’s Phil-a-pee.

The name is Phil-A-PEE.

Reese is a nice name for a boy or girl.
