Milla Jovovich ready to be a mother

11/03/2006 at 02:06 PM ET

Model/actress/clothing designer Milla Jovovich, 30, says she is mentally ready to be a mother but her body disagrees. "I’d love to have a baby. I think the only reason I haven’t conceived is because of my active lifestyle. My body won’t allow itself to get pregnant now because it knows it wouldn’t be in a healthy environment." She admits that being a top model has deeply affected her fertility: ‘"I need to take a year off, sit down, watch some movies and eat some yummy food. And then, boom! It will happen. Give me a few months off at home, let me relax and suddenly I’m healthier and I gain ten pounds."

Jovovich, who has been married twice, is currently engaged to British director Paul W.S. Anderson, 41, since 2003.

Meh she’s actually too thin to have a baby, she would probably have many health problems..
Funny how the celebs can conceal their real problem with some made up story!

tink1217 on

it is nice to hear a model say she knows she is too thin!!! I wish her a baby in the near future!

Um, Shawn, what is considered “too thin”?

Skinny people actually *do* have kids, you know. :P

Well, thank goodness that she has the courage to tell the truth. A lot of actress’ and models NEVER claim to have or have had eating disorders and have really messed up their bodies. I commend her and I hope that she does get healthy enough to concieve and have a healthy pregnancy. She’ll make a great mom since she already has the “right” concerns for herself and her pregnancy.

Shawn, she said she needed to be home and eat to gain 10lbs in order to conceive. She knows that her life is too busy so what she does eat just gets burnt off.
Good on her for acknowledging that she knows it’s because of her career’s need for her to be slim is the reason why she can’t conceive. It’s nice to see someone who is on the ball about stuff like this instead of being oblivious.

Well, good luck to her! I wish everyone’s infertility problems could be solved as easily as Mila thinks hers will be. Many people have been told to “just relax and it will happen” only to find out that doesn’t always work.

I LOVE her; she’s always been one of my favorite actresses. (I love her clothing line too.) I hope she conceives and healthy, beautiful baby!

Milla sorry but I think it’s delusional to assume your body won’t “allow itself” to get pregnant because of an active lifestyle… whatever that means… sure a healthy, relaxed lifestyle is a fertility booster but I’ve heard about women who were on heroin or coke or boozed up all the time and still fell pregnant (which is of course EXTREMELY sad and irresponsible!!!) Anorexia can lead to a temporary stop of the monthly period but Milla doesn’t look THAT thin? She has always been slender, but in a pretty way.

In any case, I’m sure she will be a great mommy and I wish her the best of luck!

yes, she is snowed under trying to get and keep parts in Hollywood. The competition is really fierce even for magazine covers and cheesy movies etc. It reminds me almost exactly of things of Drew Barrymore has said about becoming a Mother. Feeling really ready and then not feeling ready.
I love what Milla said.

I know that skinny women fall pregnant all time. But women who’ve been clinically anorexic for years often find that it leaves them infertile, sometimes permanently. Marya Hornbacher-Beard’s memoir, “Wasted: a Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia” goes into that. Even Tracey Gold said she was very lucky that her battle with anorexia did not leave her permanently infertile. When a woman’s body fat % falls below a certain minimum her body doesn’t produce the levels of hormones necessary to ovulate or support a pregnancy. Undernourishment leads a woman’s body into a state of starvation survival and she will not ovulate or menstruate if she is just barely staying alive. Sometimes, the body is so damaged from the starvation that ovulation and menstruation does not begin again even when she regains a healthy weight.

Here’s that double standard again… Too thin to have a baby???
Yes, thin people have babies ALL the time. Thin does not necessarily equal unhealthy.
In this particular case she admits to NOT being healthy. However, carrying extra pounds before getting pregnant is also extremely unhealthy not only for you but for your baby.
I know there’s a problem with models, stars etc promoting a thinner than average standard “causing” women to have eating disorders, etc. But what about the thin people of the world??? Now they’re perceived to be unhealthy and it’s the same thing again. Only your doctor can tell you your “healthy” weight depending on your age, height, ethnicity and lifestyle.
Americans in general are a lot more obese and unhealthy year after year. Little kids eat McDonalds every day and go play on their video games and grow up to be fat and then have eating disorders when they see people on TV who are thin!! Not entirely the Entertainment Industry’s fault.

A close friend of mine is very thin and has been classified by her doctor has underweight. (She’s about 5’5, about 100 pounds and a size 0). She and her hubby have been trying to conceive for over two years now with no luck. Her doctor has advised her to gain at least 15 pounds, but she has a hard time since she’s a vegetarian who doesn’t like sugar and is allergic to wheat.

I’m not sure about Mila or other models, but I would guess most of them are about the same size as my friend. (My 16 year old neighbor started modeling, and was told she needs to loose weight, and she’s 5’7 and 110 pounds.) So there’s a real difference between being thin and being clinically underweight, which most model probably are.

Anorexia isn’t the only way to stop having periods. Women who train & exercise a lot also stop mensturating like gymnasts.

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
